So I today was my second Dialysis treatment -___-

Hi, guys, my name is Andres. I'm 22 years old, and I was born with a condition called "prune belly syndrome". The muscles in my stomach never fully developed (or something), and because of that, my bladder is deformed and my kidneys are shriveled. O.o

Well, I've had complications my entire life, as far back as I can remember, I've always had to go to the doctor. When I was 11 years old, I had a surgery that made it so I could cath my self through my stomach. Doctors took my adendix, and used it to make like, a pathway from my belly button to my bladder. When I urinate the normal way, I don't get emptied fully, because my bladder is like, extremely huge.  So cathing through my stomach lets me fully empty my bladder.

Either way, my kidneys are very small, and constantly producing urine. They are very weak now. A few years ago, they were functioning at around 30% of what they are supposed to be doing. Now, they function at about 3%.

Fast forward to a few days ago, I was feeling fine. I awoke at around 5 am, and I let out the slightest cough while lying in bed. Something shot out of my mouth, and I caught it. It was dark, so I went into the bathroom and threw it in the sink. I turned the light on, and saw that it was like, a big ol' dark red booger. This alarmed me of course, so I texted a buddy of mine to have him look it up on the internet, because I don't have a computer. He said he wasn't home, and told me to go to the doctor. I called the local walk-in center, but of course they were closed because it was, well, 5 in the morning. So I called 911 and the guy on the phone said he couldn't give me any medical advice, and that he could only dispatch an ambulance.

I get to the ER and they take an x-ray of my chest and confirm that nothing is wrong. My blood test, however, showed that my creatnin (SP?) was 18, as opposed to my normal of 5. Scary.  Naturally, they admitted me. The first thing they told me was that I was going to have to undergo dialysis treatment. I almost had a nervous breakdown. As a child, my doctors would try to scare me by saying they were going to make me do dialysis.

Two days ago, I underwent the procedure to have a catheter put into my chest. Yesterday was my first Dialysis treatment. I had it again today, and I will have it again tomorrow. Maybe I will get to go home tomorrow. Then I will have to come back here 3 times a week.

Now, a little bit about myself.

I was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and currently live in Dover, Delaware. I have lived all over Delaware, and also Trenton, New Jersey. My father's family is from New York and Puerto Rico, and my mother's from Cuba and Spain.

I didn't graduate High School because I was always sick and generally unmotivated, but I got my GED.

I enjoy drawing, basketball, and watching football and boxing/MMA. My favorite tv shows are Dragonball Z, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Other than that, I don't care for much television, besides the news.

I am also into old school video games such as Street Fighter II, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and all the classic Mario Titles, as well as Sonic. As for newer games, I enjoy any competitive online FPS. I carry a rank of 42 in Team Slayer on Halo 3. I also play Gears of War 3 pretty often.

Oh my good God...a creatinine of 18?  And you're still alive??  I can't imagine that!

I am almost certain that tonight I shall have a nightmare about coughing up a great big ol' red booger.   That must have been incredibly frightening, but now that is in the past, it makes me giggle.  Sorry.  I haven't heard that word in a very long time.  So, no one gave you any idea of what caused the booger formation?  They've just ignored it?

I supposed they've talked to you about getting a fistula?  Now that you've had a couple of treatments, how are you feeling?

I don't know anything about online gaming, but coincidentally, I started watching a film on Netflix today, and I was watching the previews.  There was one for a movie called "Stay Alive"; I have a feeling it may have gone straight to DVD.  It's about this group of gamers who get a new game called "Stay Alive".  Ends up that if you "die" in the game, you die in real life in the same fashion that you've been killed in the game.  Not really a novel idea, but I suggest you and your online buds avoid any game called "Stay Alive."

I didn't get the impression it was supposed to be an indictment of online gaming.  I think the gaming story was just a plot device for a horror story, sort of like The Ring where if you watch a particular videotape, you're dead within a day or something like that.  I don't think there was anything particularly creative about the plot/story, but having the gamers die in the same way that their character died was kinda cool.  It's a way to introduce lots of really scary makeup and special effects.  Now that we've talked about it, I might have to rent it.   

I think you are the first IHD member to talk about both boogers and online gaming in their introduction.  Surely that warrants some sort of prize.

the way you told your story was very refreshing.  I'm glad you found this site.  I've only been here a short while, but I feel so much wiser regarding dialysis.  There are lots of links here too, so you basically can learn as much as you care to!

I had surgery similar to yours.  THe doctor took my intestine and attached it to my bladder, since my bladder had hardened up.  I don't self cath through the stomach, but I do self cath and talk to your doctor about bladder infections, since after dialysis started, I got  frequent infections. From none to a few time a year.  ANd it was caused by the low urine output, so nothing was flushing the bladder.   There are some studies done on kidney transplants with a surgically repaired bladder, just google them if you want to know more information.

I'm amazed that your "normal" creatinine was 5, but no one had started prepping you for dialysis.  Mine has  been  around 3.5 lately, and I am getting an AV fistula on April 13th.  I assume you have to have hemodialysis with your problems? Do you have a mitrofanoff?  Or an ileal conduit?  I used to have a mitrofanoff and it sort of caved in on me, any problems with it?

How old are you?

Good luck, sorry your having such a rough time, but once they get you on a regular regimen, I bet you'll feel so much better.  I can't believe you managed so long without it!

I feel that we are sort of similar in a way--I was also diagnosed not too long ago (Nov 2011) for ckd. I was 22 years old (just turned 23 last week).

I kinda have a similar story. At 15 I got very sick and finally when into the hospital and the said my creatine was at 17 and I was put on dialysis that night. All they could tell me was my kidneys are too small for my body.
