If you haven't read my previous posts... I have always mentioned how much I DESPISE my nephrologist and transplant team.

My university is giving out undergraduate awards for summer research experience and I want to apply. They want us to pick a professor we are interested in working with. Immediately I look under the faculty of medicine and chose a nephrologist who is doing studies on kidney transplants. It turns out that he is one of the chairs of the transplant program in my province. I just emailed him about my interest..

If I get the award and if he accepts me as a student.... OHH THE IRONY!!!

I just looooove creating biased and awkward situations for myself and others!!!!  :sarcasm;

Don't get me wrong.. I truly have an interest in learning more about kidney failure and transplantation. If I get the job I can share what I learn on this board.

On the other hand, I can use this opportunity to turn the rules around at my transplant centre  :2thumbsup;

This was all done by impulse. I shot him an email right after I saw the ad for the award. It feels like I'm going crazy.

Nov 14, 2011 - PD catheter insert
Nov 15, 2011 - Started PD
Oct 11, 2012 - received a kidney from my mom, 3/6 match
-kidney wasn't filtering properly. 2nd surgery 4 days later to re-position kidney. Accident happened and kidney got damaged. Internally bleed 1.5 L and needed a transfusion. 3rd surgery to sew up the damaged kidney.
-anaphylactic shock to thymoglobulin
-ATN and rejection
-sleepy kidney waiting to recover

Oh, what a fab opportunity!  You'll be well placed to perhaps get them to make some changes.  I'd love to hear more about this should you be granted an award.

2003 peritineum burst, back to hemo
2012 start Nxstage home hemo

       still on waitinglist, still ok I think

Good luck!  It's always good to have someone being the voice of reason who has been on both sides.  You can, with a lot of diplomacy, manage to point out where they are failing the patients.  (Just try not to bite your tongue off while you are figuring out the polite way to say what you are really thinking!)

It took over a 2 weeks for him to get back to me. Basically he said that he is not in a position to take any students in the summer... whatever that means. What sucks is..he is the only research professor in nephrology here in Manitoba.. sad.

I think it's really cool you're going to study the kidney.  I hope you find another professor to work with on your project.  You're obviously highly motivated to learning how to fight kidney diseases.  Where there is a will there is a way.  You can do it.
