TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - For a third year, the two men at the helm of Kansas Dialysis Services are using pedal power to push their patients to better health.

Medical Director Dr. Scott Solcher and CEO Stan Langhofer embark on their 3rd annual "Tour de Dialysis" Sept. 30, 2011. The 100-mile bike ride will raise money for their Patient Assistance Fund, so patients can get needed care.

One type of care gaining more attention these days is dialysis at home. Solcher says typical in-center dialysis is done for about 4 hours, 3 days a week. However, he says, our body makes urine 24/7, so fluid tends to build up between sessions, making it tough on the body when it's removed. Consequently, he says, it can take patients a while to recover, leaving them fatigued and often with other side effects, such as a spike in blood pressure.

By contrast, home dialysis can be done on a daily basis, which means patients feel better overall. As a result, Solcher says, several studies have shown patients on home dialysis have fewer overall health problems, leading to lower medical costs.

Some people aren't able to do home dialysis, so patients should consult their doctor if it's an option.
