The next Patient Lifestyle Meeting of 2009 will be held in Davenport, Iowa on Sunday, July 12th.

Come and meet others who've been there, get informed and enjoy a complimentary kidney-friendly brunch. Sign up now for this event at no charge to patients and one guest.

More cities to come:

Patient Lifestyle Meetings

For the past several years, RSN has hosted Patient Lifestyle Meetings (PLM) across United States (at no charge), attended by people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their family members.

At these meetings, healthcare professionals and renal patients—on dialysis or with a kidney transplant—speak on life-enhancement and illness-related issues relevant to living a fulfilling life despite renal disease.

Any illness—and particularly CKD—is too demanding when you don’t have hope. If people with CKD do not believe they have a future, then the demands placed upon them by dialysis or by the immunosuppressant regimen will prove overwhelming. The goal of the patient lifestyle meeting series is to let patients know that their kidney problems are just that... problems that can be overcome with hope, an eye toward the future, a working knowledge of their disease, and a touch of common sense.

Patients are treated to a renal-friendly lunch or brunch and refreshments, and raffle prizes will be given away throughout the day. During the scheduled breaks, attendees are encouraged to visit information stations located throughout the venue where they can speak with experts on topics such as cooking renal-friendly foods, making traveling easier, re-entering the workforce, taking charge of one’s own health, and honing one’s skills as a caregiver.

Representatives from companies and associations involved in renal care will provide updates on the latest equipment, pharmaceuticals, and patient resources.

RSN trains and hires kidney patients to organize and run the Patient Lifestyle Meetings, so if they don't have a contact in your area, you wouldn't have seen one. If you'd like to get involved contact Lori Hartwell at RSNHope.org.

MM, I've been to several kidney patient meetings when I lived in Chicago. I had a nutritionist who would tell us about them. This was because my boss was the distributor for DairyDelicious. (I miss that stuff)

Just got back from the meeting had a blast alot of info at this meeting got alot of stuff to be read so to speak. I was asked by a ERSD Network13 Rep how i heard about todays meeting. I told her through IHD she got a kick out of that cause she never heard of the web site so she started to spread it around and i had other people ask me about our site They had a table that had the NxStage machine on display i looked it over got info and a dvd about it. Checked out the transplant info table. Talked to a ESRD Network 13 Coordinator Patient Rep and found out she is also very afraid of needles and wants to keep in touch with me so we can lean on each other about our phobia. So if you have not went to one of these meetings I say go it was fun food was good met alot of people going down the same road im going

RSN Palmdale CA Patient Lifestyle Meeting
By Peter Laird, MD

Renal Support Network is sponsoring a patient lifestyle meeting in Palmdale CA and I am fortunate to have the honor to host this gathering at Embassy Suites on Sunday March 20th.  Dr. Phil Tuso, MD will present survival strategies in his talk titled Kidney Disease Life Plan.  Dr. Tuso is a recent recipient of the Spirit of Nephrology Award by the Southern California National Kidney Foundation for his work with a non-profit organization dedicated to improving nutrition in dialysis patients that he founded.

NxStage Medical will also present a detailed overview of renal replacement options for CKD-5 patients, but the meeting will highlight presentations by Marissa and Tom Carr, called A day in the Life of Kidney Patients Finding Romance while on Dialysis.

Lastly, I will present my own experiences and choices for home hemodialysis as a physician turned patient, not a role reversal that I had ever anticipated when I first began my career in medicine.

Renal Support Network is a non-profit, patient run organization started in 1993 by Lori Hartwell who is now recovering from a recent living donor renal transplant.  Her last renal transplant lasted over 20 years and it is our prayers that this graft shall last as long or longer.
