Anyone develop allergies after transplant?
«

It's almost been a year since my second transplant and no big problems. But I did develop hay fever in the spring and fall. I get watery eyes and head conjestion and sneezing. I've been taking an otc allergy med, but it just seems weird to me to develop this side effect. Anyone know what causes this?

Perhaps the donor had hayfever allergy and passed it in to you

No idea. My guess would be the meds. Are you on something different or stronger than last time? Seems like something that lowers your immune system might make you more prone to allergies.

The only different med this time in myfortic rather than imuran. I was thinking that it may be the air quality. There has been a huge rise in allergies worldwide. I also thought about the donor passing it to me.

I think allergies can develop at any time during your life. I remember my mom suddenly starting to be affected by them when she was in her 50s or 60s, but it was never a problem for her in her younger years. Maybe you had a tendency toward them in the past, but your immune system was strong enough to fight them off and now that your immune system is suppressed, you're feeling it? Just a thought. Sorry you're suffering with them. I'd rather have a cold - at least colds have an end!

Strange. I just got my transplant two months ago. And now that we're heading into spring, I seem to have some of the same symptoms as you: Itchy, watery eyes.
Some meds can cause rhinitis. What meds are you on?
And this was a particularly bad winter in much of the United States. Bad winters are usually followed by a dramatic rise in mold spores, as the snow and ice thaw.
Finally, the head congestion you're describing could be a viral sinus infection rather than simple allergy. Given how many anti-rejection meds we're on, a viral infection wouldn't be at all surprising.
That's as far as my thinking takes me.

My doc confirmed that I didn't have a cold. I may just be developing them later in life. When I asked about it at my last appointment the transplant coordinator said that many patients' bodies go through weird changes. She said one patients hair went from strait to curly, another went from blond to brunette.
Why didn't I get the side effect of going from curly brown hair to strait blond hair?!
