Celebrating 60th B'Day. 12/26/15

« on: January 11, 2011, 10:48:15 AM »

I've been lurking around for a few months.
Not really wanting to get any more involved than just reading -
even after a lifetime of living with renal failure, can always learn something new.

Welcome to the forum, PatDowns  :welcomesign;

I know the first introduction is always awkward and feels like it is obligatory, but rest assure that there are many on this forum who would give their shirts off their back to give you emotional, technical and even material support once you get to know them.  But you have to start somewhere and give the members an idea of who you are and how you got to where you are, at least as to how it relates to kidney disease.

18 years in-center, wow, that is quite an accomplishment.  You are a fighter indeed.  :bow;  But you know 18 years is not the record around here  :bandance;

Congratulations and hope to read more posts from you.

Newbie caretaker, so I may not know what I am talking about :)
Caretaker for my elderly father who has his first and current graft in March, 2010.
Previously in-center hemodialysis in national chain, now doing NxStage home dialysis training.
End of September 2010: after twelve days of training, we were asked to start dialyzing on our own at home, reluctantly, we agreed.
If you are on HD, did you know that Rapid fluid removal (UF = ultrafiltration) during dialysis is associated with cardiovascular morbidity?  http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=20596
We follow a modified version: UF limit = (weight in kg)  *  10 ml/kg/hr * (130 - age)/100

How do you know you are getting sufficient hemodialysis?  Know your HDP!  Scribner, B. H. and D. G. Oreopoulos (2002). "The Hemodialysis Product (HDP): A Better Index of Dialysis Adequacy than Kt/V." Dialysis & Transplantation 31(1).   http://www.therenalnetwork.org/qi/resources/HDP.pdf

Glad you decided to de-lurk and join us. There are probably a lot of stories you could tell us, plus, hints on survival with this nasty disease. So, yes   :welcomesign;  to IHD.

Hey PatDowns, glad you decided to join IHD.  Wow...18 years!  Though it may not be a record here at IHD, that is quite an accomplishment.    :welcomesign;
