got discharged from my family doctor!

I'm not sure where this would best go so feel free to move it if need be.
Well I needed to see my family doctor, so I called a week ago to make the appointment, all is well, then today her office calls and says we have to cancel your appointment, we can't treat you anymore because you have medicare as your secondary and we don't accept medicare anymore. So I call back because I wanted to explain that I still had a primary insurance which she accepts that she could just bill that and they'd probably cover it all since I have already met my deductable and that medicare probably wouldn't be billed, instead of me making my point her office kept hanging up on me, so here I am without a family doctor and my issue not resolved. Is it really legal to do what she did? I don't understand why she just didn't use the primary if she didn't accept medicare or she why didn't she tell me at the time I scheduled the apt? Why didn't she give me a heads up first instead of refusing to flat out treat me? I hope that she gets an ear ful from my neph!

Another thought is, ok you have Medicare and they no longer except it, so still see me and bill me and have you talk to your insurance to get reimbursed or have them call their office to settle this. This person was rude and non professional and your doctor probably has no clue. My local PC doctor no longer excepts Medicaid but still excepts Medicare and stills sees me without the need to pay them the 20% not covered. Think this person is to lazy to work with patients insurance issues and could put the doctors business and job at risk if she is not going to bring in money for the doctor.
If you like the doctor, keep trying, try to talk to the doctor or talk to your insurance to pull some strings by tighting their belt with the doctors office.
Good Luck

So, what if you didn't have any form of insurance? The office doesn't accept checks or credit cards? I'd find a way to get in touch with the Dr. if you really like having her as your primary. Sounds like someone doesn't want to do their job. Good luck!

My dad, who is on medicare, went to his doctor and the office told him that they no longer handle medicare. He offered to pay cash for the visit but they also said no to that. I though cash was king.

That is just amazing!!!! How dumb can you be. I just dont get it. You find a great Dr. and the staff is a bunch of morons. Wonder who does their hiring for them.

I'm so glad our medical system is not like that!!!! MCP covers all doctor visits.

I just don't have the words for this. "Outrageous" seems so inadequate. What a lazy cow (I'll resort to name calling!)

Unfortunately, doctors can refuse to treat you for any reason. I've heard stories of people being dropped suddenly by doctors after decades of treatment with no explanation - in one case I remember the person was dropped by her psychiatrist and that sent her over the edge completely.
Could the Medicare just be an excuse?
I hope your nephrologist can help you out. Could that doctor act as your primary as well? Good luck!

He probably could, that's how good he is but with the medicare changes I don't know if it would be a good idea or not.

If it happened to me I show up once a week with a sign and printed materials to hand out. Truly unbelievable.
