This educational teleconference focuses on the possible side effects of chronic kidney disease (CKD) - anemia and depression. Many of the symptoms of anemia and depression are similar including: fatigue, loss of appetite, feelings of sadness and lack of energy. I had my regular neph check up today, and my labs showed that my egfr is only 15, but strangely enough, I'm not anemic.  However, lately I've been feeling particularly tired.  I assumed it was because of CKD anemia, so I was really nervous about today's appt.  This year has been particularly difficult for me, culminating in the illness and death of my mom.  That on top of all of this kidney stuff was enough for me to feel depressed, and I KNOW that since I'm not anemic, depression has to be the culprit to some degree.  So I think this webinar will be really interesting and instructive.

That's true, we often know our hemoglobin numbers so we know when we're anemic or not, but that's not the only problem with ESRD that can make us tired all the time besides depression. I'm interested in seeing what they say tells you it could be depression instead of anemia, in case that also helps distinguish between fatigue because of toxins, or med side effects, or low blood pressure, or fluid overloading, or other effects of dialysis, or... on and on and on...

I've just finished participating in this webinar, and it was very interesting and informative.  I got to ask a couple of questions, which was cool.  The webinar will be archived at www.aakp.org.  I don't know how long it will be before they have in on their site, but once it is up, do go and have a read of it.  There were some good pointers and good advice.

I know there have been lots of discussions about exercise, so I won't start a new one, but I will say that the importance of exercise for renal patients was once again emphasized.  It is very important to treat anemia so that the patient will have the energy to exercise, and gentle exercise, according to the speakers, is probably the most important things a patient can do for himself.  It is the best mood elevator besides just being good for you.  Treat anemia, encourage gentle exercise, and thus you have a good chance of ridding yourself of the blacker moods associated with living with a chronic illness.

Good info..

I've been walking of my off days.  I go to our mailbox and back, the trip is almost 3/4 of a mile.  I did it today and it took me 25 minutes.  I was rather impressed with myself, cuz when I was in high school, the mailbox was the bus stop, and I used to be able to make it in 15 minutes.  I was transplanted then, and I was healthier then than now.  If I can go up and back in 25 minutes, then I'm doing it faster now than when I was younger and healthier.
