Quick Question Regarding "The Committee"...

I'm working on my narrative for the application to start my nonprofit organization, Etta's Gift, and I want to be correct when I say who "the committee" consists of.  Doctors, Surgeons and who else?

I don't know.  I don't think so, but you might be right.

If you are talking about the group that decides who is eligible for a transplant, it's usually docs, surgeons, social workers, sometimes a psychiatrist, and a financial coordinator.   (If you can't pay, then no listing!)

yes, the comittee includes the nephrologists - both your primary one and at least one other independant one for a balanced view, the potential transplant surgeons, the psych, social worker and any others that may be involved(eg: dialysis co-ordinator). In my hospital I think they basically convene the whole renal department, most of whom have had some sort of dealings with the patients and make a consentual decision. I think the more opinions they get to form a consensus the more measured a decision they can get and I think, in theory, the fairer it is supposed to be.

Kelly, I think this will vary from centre to centre. UCSF listed me so quickly, I don't think they even had time for a meeting.

Anyway, for your application, I would just cover yourself by wording it generally, such as "Transplant committees usually consist of nephrologists, surgeons, social workers, nurse coordinators, and other hospital professionals." A few of the social workers I talked to had to act as financial coordinators as well. Oh, and at Cedars, the nutritionist was on the committee. I did not even have a nutritionist meet with me at Northwestern, although I think the social worker was also trying to fill this role by asking me how I am with following diets.

Thanks, that's the info I was looking for.  I didn't mean specific people.  lol  I know my post transplant Dr. was on the committe that helped determine my donor (and deny my others), but I wasn't sure who else.  But you all answered my question!  Thanks so much!
