Depression Associated with CKD Complications

CKD patients who have been diagnosed with a current major depressive episode is twice as likely as their non-depressed counterparts to be hospitalized, progress to long-term dialysis treatments, or die within a year, according to study results published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (2010;303:1946-1953). In a study of 267 non-dialysis CKD patients, nearly 61% of the 56 depressed patients died, went on long-term dialysis, or were hospitalized within a year of observation, compared with 44% of those without depression. The poorer outcomes were independent of comorbidities and kidney disease severity.
