My dear daughter

« on: June 21, 2010, 02:08:38 AM »

I am wide awake at 4am, and I'm not sure why.  I took a pain killer this evening, so that could be it, but I am wondering in any of the antirejection meds cause insomnia.

If you are on prednisone, most definitely yes. I am not on prednisone, but did experience insomnia for about the first month after transplant. I took ambien or an ativan for a while. I would say I have been sleeping fine for the past two months. It could be painkillers if you're still on narcotics, or it could be your body readjusting after the operation.

Jenna's drifting sleep pattern started when her ESRD started, and has been a challenge through 3 years of dialysis and 3 years of transplant. In her case I don't think it's the meds, and her neph said the majority of kidney patients have irregular sleep patterns.  ???

I load up on Benadry fairly often.  I don't know if it is stress or the immunosuppressives.  Maybe a combination of the both.  My clinic denied me Ambien though, they said that there were too many side effects.  I was told to just use Benedryl as needed.

I think as a nation, most Americans don't sleep very well. CKD may just add another level of complexity to an already established epidemic....

Yep.  I would be able to sleep much better now, but my schedule is weird three nights a week and that messes me up the rest of the week.  Not to mention an old dog that wakes me up every so often.  I never feel rested.

After my ransplant, I had very bad insomnia and snd still do have insomnia unless either sick, or other medical issues going on like recovering from surgery and doing p.t. I am prescribed a sleeping pill, but don't take it because I am so use to staying up all night
