Sooo glad I found the IHD while searching Baxter products. I must have read for over two hours - and learned 'stuff' as well. (I'm not sure if I'm doing this right - the intro bit - fingers crossed.)
I live in a rural area and have just commenced PD, after being diagnosed in 1967. I've had a pretty healthy life, and managed to get on to dialysis without getting too ill beforehand. I think I'm coping well. I have just finished training for the overnight cycler. The nurse travelled almost 2000km in all to do the training as we live 100km from town and our nearest city is 400km away. Very much appreciated.
The main thing I wanted to say is that I didn't feel ill before PD but now I feel oh, so much better!
Glad to know that others have been there, done that and are happy to share.

bladder cancer 1994
renal failure April 2009 due to blocked right ureter. Left kidney 20% function
November 18 2009 surgery to remove right ureter.
April 3, 2010 removal bladder, prostrate, left kidney.
June 11, 2010 started Hemo @ hospital
July 2, 2010 Embolized right Kidney due to hemoraging of tumor
September 11, 2010 RIP my love

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Jean:  A chook is a chicken.
the bush is the country, i.e. not a city dwelling chook.
 

 :welcomesign; BushChook, love your name, chooks are such fine creatures.  I used to keep 5 or 6 of them in a backyard dome in Brisvegas.

wife of Gregory, who is the kidney patient: 
1986: kidney failure at 19 years old, cause unknown
PD for a year, in-centre haemo for 4 years
Transplant 1 lasted 21 years (Lucy: 1991 - 2012), failed due to Transplant glomerulopathy
5 weeks Haemo 2012
Transplant 2 (Maggie) installed Feb 13, 2013, returned to work June 17, 2013 average crea was 130, now is 140.
Infections in June / July, hospital 1-4 Aug for infections.

Over the years:  skin cancer; thyroidectomy, pneumonia; CMV; BK; 14 surgeries
Generally glossy and happy.

Hi Chook and welcome to IHD.  I'm so glad you found us and have read some things.  I'm glad dialysis is going well for you.  PD is the best choice IMO.  If you have any questions just ask.

Welcome chook. Glad things are going well for you. Our neph likes people to start dialysis when they are feeling fairly well, it does help to adjust a little better I think. That's if you ever adjust. I am glad Galvo has got "another friend" We are not all American, I am a Brit.This site is read allover the world.Look forward to your posts.  :welcomesign;

I'm always so relieved to hear from people who say they are feeling better once they've been on dialysis a while.  I'm not on D yet, so I am still really frightened of it, but stories like yours make me feel more hopeful.
