 :rant;
We just bought a new pool for our house.  Applying for permits to put pool on our property.  Got a company to install the pool.  Had an electrician come out yesterday to get an estimate to run a line and install an electrical outlet.  The total for the work was $2985.  I about hit the floor.  Granted the run is about 120' from electrical panel to where pool will be.  After my initial shock he told me it would be $65 for the estimate.  I said this should have been brought up before the estimate.  But he kindly said if i call the company to do the work the $65 would be deducted from the cost of the quote.  WHOOPIE.
Worst part is the cost of the pool and installation is less then the cost of ONE electrical outlet.

I am debating doing the work myself but the problem is inspectors would come out at every step of the process to approve the work.  And they take there time getting to properties.  So if i do it myself i will save a ton of money but the pool likely wont be approved until next year due to the stop and wait of the inspectors.  And karen & me would like it up before memorial day when we are having a party.

On the plus side, you'll only have to make this investment once!....

If you want my  :twocents;,  Go for it!... Don't deny yourself!... Treat yourself to the professionals!... You've been through enough to have earned a little luxury!... I know it's hard to be spending money on ourselves... It's odd, I'd spend a fortune on Mum without thinking twice, but if it's for myself, I find myself justifying it!.... But I'm learning!... Anything that improves my quality of life can only make me a better carer to my mum!....

You don't really need the hassle of dealing with inspectors, and running the risk of perhaps injuring yourself in the process, AND it'll take a lot longer than you want it to!....

Look at it as an investment in your health... You'll get lots of use from the pool... That can only be good for you!....

Long may you enjoy your pool!....

God bless...

Would spending the money to have the electrician do the job put you in a financial hole?  If so, then I understand your dilemma and would think seriously about doing the work myself, realizing that I'd have to postpone the pleasure of using the pool for another year.  It would make life that much harder worrying about personal finances after making an unwise choice.

If, however, you could cover the cost without putting yourselves at real financial risk, I'd take a deep breath, let the professionals to do it and spend every waking moment enjoying that pool!  The unpleasant truth is that those of us with CKD/ESRD have shorter lifespans, so that gives us permission to be a bit self-indulgent from time to time.  That's my argument and I'm sticking with it.!

Amen to that!....

Probably why I don't even think twice about spending money on Mum...

Screw them!  Call your pool place and get a list of Electricians that do this work and then take the lowest bid.  Tell them up front that you are getting FREE bids for the job.  I thought people were out of work?  Don't let them rip you off.

PARTY?  EVERYONE AT PAUL AND KAREN'S HOUSE FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!!  WHoooo   :yahoo;

Thx for your replies.
Darth i tending to agree with you.  Let the pros do it, but only cause there are so many STUPID codes and variances that i am not 100% aware of.  I could see the fines piling up if i were to do it myself.  And the waiting for them to inspect would drive me crazy.

MM it wouldn't put me in to big a financial hole.  But it is a lot of money that i wasn't considering spending.  I figured i would run an extension cord from my garage to the pump like at our last house.
The deal Karen and me had had was she gets a pool and i get a nice new shed for the lawn mowers-snowblower ect so i could finally have a home(the garage) for my Baja(vw).  Guess the shed will have to wait.

Rerun the pool company has a list of pool installers but not a list of electricians.  I didnt even think about the electrical side of the pool when we were buying it.  And the pool place sure didnt mention it.  Im sure they are aware it cost more for the electricans then the pool itself.  I have someone coming on Saturday to give me a quote.
And all are welcome to the party.  Saturday of memorial day weekend...
Thx for letting me vent/rant a little

Go for it!...

Leave the professionals to it!..... Let them deal with officialdom!..... You'll only end up tearing your hair out if you do it yourself!...

Enjoy your pool... You've earned it!....

Love...
