new clothes on PD

Don't know if this subject has come up before but my question is -once you began on PD, did you have to do much in the way of buying new clothes? I am still working full time and wonder if I am going to need to fork over a lot of money for new pants once I begin PD. My job is not that high in customer interaction, (I work behind the scenes in hospital administration) so wouldn't have to worry about that, but just wanted to know. I have not taken off much time to start PD -just a week for training and a few days in between.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi BR_belle,
I was on PD for 1.5 years until I had a transplant 6 mos. ago. Sorry to tell you...I couldn't wear any of my clothes. I had to buy elastic pants or maternity jeans. I worked a full time job where I have to dress business attire Mon-Thurs except on Friday dress down day. I wore a lot of dresses and shirts. I found some stylish maternity jeans from JC Penney. The elastic is on the back and the front zip/button like regular jeans. I loved them.

Hi BR_Belle. My husband was on manual exchanges for several months before going on a night cycler. He did have some problems with his pants being too tight when he was "full" so we bought him a few pairs of bigger ones. But after he started the cycler when he is only "full" at night, he went back to his regular size.
Best to you!

Sorry , tops may be ok , but your going to need some comfy trousers ! Elasticated waists like a lot say are the best. Not only do you expand your waistline with the fluid , you will over time gain weight from absorbing some of that fluid as its glucose !

I got some cute pants at Gap Maternity and Target has some nice ones, too. I am very petite so the fluid has nowhere to go but forward so the belly made it impossible to wear my old clothes. You can also find cute maternity clothes at a good price on eBay if you are into that. Winter will be easier as I can bundle up in some nice belly-hiding sweaters.

In winter i live in jeans, i buy the low slung ones (not bumsters but boy waist) they sit just below the belly. i then try to wear loosish tops so that i don't look like i'm muffin toppingI loosely put the catheter through one belt loop and tuck it into my pocket, stops it pulling.
When i was working i made sure i had a couple of different button positions on my slacks, that way i could loosen my pants as the day got on.

You might want to look for my post on Ever Wonder About the Calories. In my case, my body ingests 937.5 calories a day from my dialysate. If I didn't ride my exercise bike every day I would blow up like a balloon. As it is, I barely stay even. Like it or not, you will probably have to investigate some kind of exercise program.

Now I'm getting even more leery about starting dialysis. I know I shouldn't complain about it because if no dialysis, bye bye!
I very concerned about gaining weight. Not because I'm vain, but when I gain even just a few pounds, I feel so crummy and bloated. But at least I know I can get a few pounds off if I watch what I eat.
But now, when I start PD, I'm probably going to feel like a balloon. I just can't stand the idea of wearing maternity pants. I had a failed transplant about a year and a half ago and I lost 30 pounds because of it. Thankfully I never gained it back and I wasn't even trying to diet. For some reason, my appetite changed after the surgery.
A few months ago I just went out and bought some new clothes because my old ones looked sloppy because they were too big.
Oh well, like I said, I should be happy that there is even a process that can keep us alive.

Honestly, I lost weight while on PD. I guess all that excess fluid drained out. I was able to maintain a good weight. The only problem is the belly filled with solution. I've been post transplant for almost 8 mos, and I weight more now than ever (15lbs more). I know alot of it is due to Prednisone and all the other meds.

I haven't had a problem with weight on PD. I didn't have to buy new clothes because of it - mainly cos I'd lost weight when I got sick. I've certainly never considered buying maternity clothes. My normal clothes fit me - I just have to be careful when getting jeans or trousers that the waistband is low enough, or not too rigid. I think if people say they feel like they are 8 months pregnant then they've never been 8 months pregnant ha ha. It's more like 5 months I reckon.
