First use of my AV Fistula

Tonight was the first time they used my fistula. The nurse advised me that this week they will use only one needle, and half of the catheter. Next week, they will use the two needles. I did not use any numbing cream. I did take a xanax before I went in for treatment. It did not hurt, I felt it, but it felt like when I have gotten IVs placed. I was worried for nothing, thank goodness. To make up for the fact that she couldn't use both needles, the nurse gave me my annual flu vaccine in the other arm.

Woot! Good news.
Your still un-matured fistula is easy to infiltrate, so I hope your techs will be super careful with it.
Here's to smooth sailing. I'm glad it didn't hurt. Once in a while they will hit a nerve, though. Even cream won't keep that from hurting, but it isn't an every day kind of thing.
Best wishes,
Aleta

Update: Saturday night was the third use of my fistula. Stick, no good flow, remove. Stick, no good flow, Infiltrated! We decided to abandon the fistula and use my catheter. The arm hurt like an S.O.B. They iced it during the treatment. Tuesday the plan is to carefully examine the fistula, depending on how it looks, we may use it or not.
