Burning and Itchy skin
«

Over the last few days, the skin on my face and neck itches badly. It feels like there is an infection in my ear lobes, and the skin burns. I am not on dialysis yet, could this be related to my diet, and if so, what, would you think. I have already tried Aveeno bodywash and lotion, not much help there.

Ouch! It sounds painful.
My husband had problems with itching before he started dialysis, Jean. But I don't really have any good answer for you.

High phosphorus can cause itching. Did you happen to use anything different on your face that you could be allergic too??

Aleta, thanks anyways.
Del, no, I have not changed anything at all insofar as bathing products or soaps. I hope it is not high phosporous, because I really do not eat a lot of veggies or fruits, or dairy . It is a little better with the Aveeno. If you have ever had your earlobes pierced and got them infected, that is how it feels.

Pre-kidney failure I was having burning and itching in my lower legs, especially on the front. Looking back now I think it was because of edema, a problem that has gone away with dialysis. I used many different over the counter cures, none of which made much difference. I hope you are able to get a handle of your problem.

Jean...
You poor thing... Itching is SO irritating, and absolutely exhausting... Mum has this problem too even with dialysis... The Neph. says he sees it frequently... He has prescribed a low dose of antihistamine (Zyrtec) to be taken daily, and it appears to have sorted the problem... Well it's okay for now anyway!...

You would be surprised to know what contains a lot of phosp. Peanut butter, peanuts, beans, bread, pan cakes, Meat, Cola etc etc etc... It is crazy to know what to eat and what not to eat. Ask your Neprologist to give you a sheet with the no no foods.
Hope you feel better

The itching and burning sounds like:
Peripheral neuropathy: Damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which can be caused by kidney failure and/or diabetes. (Some people get a "pins and needles" feeling in their extremities too from this.)
My neph prescribed Neurontin (gabapentin) 300 mg every night at bedtime for my neuropathy. Helped me a lot.

Hi Jean , yes its high phos , itching is the first sign , its like its under your skin if that makes sense ? Nearly everything you eat contains it , not just the obvious. Maybe its time to find out about binders ? As soon as it comes down, the itching will stop .

Jean..... I was having the ichy sore body and I started to eat more tums during the day..... I would eat like 6 of them.... after a few days the iching stopped and my body does not feel so pain full... Plus when I went in for blood work after about a week of eating tums.... my phos was down to 4.1 and it was over 5..... try the tums.... kathy

Seriously, see your doctor and get some Gabapentin!!! It's generic and cheap. If it doesn't work, toss it and try something else!
