Just started this! How long does it work for?

My SO just started doing his exchanges at home, we just started this last week on friday----I have many questions!
This is my first one:
How long does the peritoneum last, so how long can you do this type of dialysis?
Can some people do it forever? He has bad arteries and veins, so i don't think he can do a transplant. Can someone live like this for the rest of their life? He is 54, and he is not diabetic but he does have heart disease.

Good question as ive just finished doing PD ! There are no hard and fast rules as to how long you can do it for . For me i got about just over 4 years on it but i know other people who have got 2 and some that have got 8. According to my pd nurse her longest patient on pd was 8 yrs. Also a factor of how long you can do it, is the strength of bags you use, the weaker the bags ,the longer you tend to have , but in the end it cant go on forever ( i wish it could have) When pd stops you just change to hemo , like i have.

My nurse told me that she has a patient who has done PD for 17 years and another patients for 16 years.  Both patients continue to do PD. Depending on how you use it, it can last for a long time.
