My friend Debbie drives an electric car that was in the shop so the dealer gave her an electric assist bicycle as a loner. Today Debbie needed to return it but she didn't want to ride it across the bridge and through downtown to the shop, so I volunteered. Wow was that fun.

The thing does like 20 miles an hour without peddling. The engine is built into the wheel so it is hard to see it is an electric bike by looking at it. You can peddle and use the motor which is great going up Seattle hills because you can just peddle normally while you go zipping up a hill.

I got to the lower West Seattle bridge and was trying to figure out how the bike paths went. I let a guy go by on his road bike - he was wearing a tour de France outfit all lycra with logos as he raced along I just followed him. It was so much fun. I think I irritated him because I was keeping up by lazily peddling.

They're $3,500 and with the dog not really practical but they are totally awesome. And great fun.
