Me and the boys

« on: March 03, 2009, 08:21:29 AM »

HI all I need help.. On Sat my machine alarmed while training to do my 2nd drain.. After that it has been downhill.. I fill with no problem and then I drained very slow.. Now I dont drain at all.. I have had at least an exra 2000 in me and feel so bloated. Finally today I will go for hemo to get some of this off but I dont know what is going on.. It was working fantastic and then just stopped I am not constipated, my machine is higher then the bed (I also tried manuals and that too does not work) any advice greatly appreciated (oh and when the fluid was draining even slowly it was clear not even fibrin..) They did though try and put medicine in catheter yesterday in case there was fibrin)

if the machine is a lot higher than you are it might have a hard time drawing the fluid upwards. i had a similar problem in the beginning, but lowering the machine to the same height as myself fixed it.

That happened to me last year and I had to go on hemo til they could have a laparoscopic look at the catheter.  I had tissue overgrowth or omentum blocking the catheter so fluid would go in but the tissue would just suck and cover the drain holes.  It can be repaired laparascopically.

another problem that i had in the beginning was that my omentum was blocking my catheter, so it would allow me to fill alright, but when it came time to drain, the suction pulled my omentum around the end of the tube (inside) and prevented it from draining properly. minor surgery fixed the problem for me. (the omentum is a curtain-like appendage in the stomach that separates areas of the stomach from other areas.)
good luck!

I was on manual PD for 9 years and would have trouble draining sometimes.  In fact, I couldn't use the cycler because I could NOT drain while lying down...had to be sitting or standing.  Never had any fibirin problems, just positioning problems.  Sometimes I had to become a contortionist just to get it to drain.  Good luck 7piglets!

Hi everyone thx...I think when they replaced my pd (due to first dr put it in wrong) they removed the ometum (sp?)
My stomach is killing me today so I called the nurse practioner and asked her to put me on antibiotics..she agreed and I went in they put vanco in my catheter then also ived me with vanco.. I had to have hemo today and surprise surprise that too couldnt go smooth..I clotted and had to remind them I need a saline drip, then they went to put heparin in me.(hello whole reason I clotted was because I cant take heparin) anyway it was fixed and I still have fluid but not as much and I feel alittle better ..
I am hoping the infection clears up and I can go back on pd..

Ok nothing ever just goes smooth... Seems I definately have infection since I feel like crap and have fever and stomach is killing me. They tried to fill and drain again today and nothing..filled no prob but not a drop came back. They checked wit surgeon and he didnt remove the ometum (sp?) why who knows you think he would have for preventative messures given all the bs I had to deal with .. They want me to go for pd scan tomorrow with dye also..My only concern is all this fluid they wont me to fill 1000 I thought you shouldnt fill if you cant drain esp with infection...

Hi 7Piglets,

I was just reading through your post and was wondering how things have worked out for you.  I certainly hope they've gotten your drainage problem worked out (that kind of sounds like you have a plumbing problem, doesn't it! LOL) and that you can finally start getting some good results with PD.  I feel so badly for you because this just seems to have been going on for way too long.

Best of luck to you and I hope you'll post and let us know how you're doing.

Hey, 7Piglets.  :waving;   I've been "lurking "in IHD, but your problem made me decide to contribute.

I had this problem too - could fill fine, but either took an hour to drain or no drain at all.  They discovered through a fluoroscope that my internal tubing was "kinked"; it was unkinked by a doctor using the fluoroscope (hurt like the dickens!) and I have had no problems since then with either manual or the cycler.

BTW, my cycler is higher than the bed but that has no impact.

when we were training for the cycler. Dave would fill but not drain, not a drop, we would beg him, threaten him, plead with him to drain lol.  After some good doses of heparin and cath care the fibrons let go and he drained like a trooper.  We still put heparin in every night in the bags to help stop any fibrons from building in there or a blood clot, and he's still draining nicely.  We get a few alarms here and there usually on the first cycle drain and sometimes he has to stand up for a minute or to since the cavity is pretty much dry when he starts each night.
