Yesterday mom said her feet were burning. I put a cold towel over them. After 10 minutes she wanted it off. Didn't say much about it after that.

Today she said her feet feel cold and like wood. She wants to know why and how to make it better. I've done a bit of looking and it doesn't appear that anyone has mentioned feet feeling like wood, but that dialysis can make extremities cold.

I will ask her neph today too.

Since she is a diabetic and probably hasn't been very active lately due to illness it could be related to circulation problems.  Ask the nurses at the unit.

Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Yes, be sure to check with the nurses/Dr asap....sounds like circulation difficulties.  Let us know.

03/2007 Fantastic Eye Surgeon in ND got my sight back and implanted lenses in both eyes, great distance & low reading.
Gortex 4/07.  Started dialysis in ND 5/4/2007
Gortex clotted off Thanksgiving Week of 2007, was unclotted and promptly clotted off 1/2 hour later so Permacath Rt chest.
3/2008 move to NC to be close to children.
2 Step fistula, 05/08-elevated 06/08, using mid August.
Aug 5, 08, trained NxStage and Home on 9/3/2008.
Fistulagram 09/2008. In hospital 10/30/08, Bowel Obstruction.
Back to RAI-Latrobe In Center. No home hemo at this time.

Mom's feet are doing okay now. Since she's in the hospital they schedule dialysis for whenever. Usually it's been in the morning, once at 4am! Today it will be at 8:30pm.

They give her lydocain which most times helps with pain from needles. I'm wondering if she should get the cream that you put on and wrap plastic around for an hour before. Is that too much on the skin?

At least in Sharon's case, I put it on up to 2 hours before sticking her, doesn't show any ill effects on her skin at all.....

Make sure Mom isn't developing Charcot Foot. This is a serious condition that affects the bone structure of the foot. Diabetics get this condition due to neuropathy. The foot gets injured, the diabetic doesn't feel the injury then presents with fluctuating temps of the foot. Then all hell breaks loose. My husband has this condition and believe me it is crippling.
