I think I just heard an advertisement for Natalie Cole being on CNN's Larry King Live this week talking about her need for a kidney transplant.  Maybe Tuesday night?  If anyone has the details, please post them.  Thanks!

I don't watch Larry King Live all that often, but this sure seems like a good way to get the word out about kidney donation.

Larry King is an idiot.   He didn't "listen" to her answers, he was just waiting for his turn to talk again.  And he didn't even do a good job at waiting.   

Natalie is beautiful!

But seriously, she would ask her living donor to "wait until the end of the year because she is working".   Really?  What if something happened to your donor?  Got sick?  Got in a horrible accident?  Would you really put it off THAT long?   So what will she do if she gets "the call"?  Ask them to "call back"?

I had a negative reaction to this interview.  I felt as if she was saying that dialysis was no big deal.  And her people can arrange for her to have dialysis anywhere in the world...  And she'll take a transplant on her time... But maybe I was seeing it the wrong way if some thought she was great   

I also thought Larry King was trying to advocate a bit more for those who do not see it as a piece of cake.   

Interesting differences in perception.  It seems to be about the same range on the blog too.

I was confused - she seemed to say interferron and chemotherapy were the same thing.
Big plug for Davita in there - even mentioned the CEO? But I would too if they were booking my dialysis all over the world.
She seemed confused about how kidneys are allocated (which is not uncommon) and implied that people who had a greater need got them first (but it's actually wait time, there is no ranking by need like liver or heart recipients.)
They said that people who wanted to find out about donating should go to the UNOS website. UNOS deals with deceased donor kidney allocation, not with living donors. They did give out the web address of Cedar Sanai, but it was just letters www.csmc.edu and I doubt most people caught it.
Natalie said she never had a kidney problem before she went into full renal failure. It seems that it's usually the way it goes, unless you have a long-standing health problem that is diagnosed  earlier, many people know nothing about their kidneys until they fail.

The transplant surgeon said last week that he hates it when celebreties get a kidney quickly and makes it all seem so easy. 

I have always liked Natalie and am glad she is being interviewed.  It will always be easier for wealthy people than those depending on Medicare.  (not easier physically, but easier to pay for treatments, loss of income, etc)


Thought I would just add that I had a fever of 102 when I wrote the above post.  Really don't even remember writing it!!  I need to just stay in bed until my thoughts are clearer

Because I have a tiny horseshoe kidney it showed up as an abnormality in an xray and then they did further testing.  Definitely not the best measure though. xx

I have the same impression reading the transcript as it did when I was watching. I think this sort of piece is unfortunate because it spreads mis-information. Just my

if she dosent need the transplant and dialysis is so easy for her then why not give one of those offered kidneys to somone who needs them? Its nice thats he can travel and have dialysis wherever she wants. most people cant do this so lets give them the kidneys!!
