According to recent studies, kidney disease is a growing problem in the United States and many people here in Laredo could be at risk. Our Annette Garcia explains.
Annette: “Hispanic Americans are almost twice as likely to have diabetes than non-hispanics of the same age. Not good news for a city where the population consists of a majority of hispanics. The main causes of kidney disease in the U.S. are Diabetes and high blood pressure. For many people, that means having dialysis treatments on a weekly basis. Physicians say it’s important to notice the warning signs of kidney disease. Rene Martinez says, “if a person has Diabetes, high blood pressure or a family member who already has kidney disease it’s important for those people to have themselves checked as well for any time of kidney disease that may be developing.” Coming up tonight at ten, the story of a young dialysis patient who was diagnosed at only 24 years old and hasn't let treatments get in the way of his dream. We will have his inspirational story tonight at ten.”
