I am curious how the rest of the worlds view of Oboma is.

Mainly people in the UK.
Prime Minister Brown gave president Oboma some wonderful gifts when he came last week.  First edition children's books for Obomas kids.  A handmade pen holder from a sunken slave ship, same ship the resolute desk in the oval office is made from.  If im correct.  These are one of a kind gifts with thought put behind them.
General when a person of such respect and such a good friend of the us comes over there is a joint news conference and a major dinner for the incoming VIP.  One of our biggest allies to say the least.

So Oboma has no joint news conference.  No specail dinner and his gifts to Prime minister Gordon brown were 25 OLD dvds.  That for the record wont play in the UK.  Different format on the dvd's.  And Michele oboma ran to the White house gift shop to get some toys for the Prime Ministers kids.

When a newspaper from the UK called the white house and asked why the snub the mouthpiece for oboma said you are no different then anyone else in the UN.  No Differnt then anyone else in the UN  that is SCARY.

I am at a loss here.  is this Oboma's inexperience?  or his true nature?

Would like to hear some outside views on these issues.  If anyone has any.

Forgot the big snub sorry.
After 9/11 the Uk gave at the time president Bush a Bust of Winston Chuchill for the white house.  A nice bust worth a few bucks i would imagine.

It seems president Oboma tried to give this to Prime Minister Gordon as a gift.  Until Mr . Gordon explained that actualy the bust was a gift to the white house from the UK.  Mr. Oboma said he didnt want it.  Mr. Brown said please put it in a museum or something like that.  Oboma was insistant that prime Minister brown take the bust back to the UK.

How rude.  Yet Obama accepts the New Helicopters to fly him everywhere.  I don't get it.

I'd prefer it if they didn't give gifts at all on state visits, they all have far too much already and don't need the stuff - it's the same when the Queen goes anywhere, she's swamped with gifts. Why not give them to a good cause instead?  :twocents;

As much as the left complained about Bush being stupid, what Obama did was well beyond stupid.

Devon, what a very strange thing to say, after all this time.  Seems entirely unnecessary from where I sit.

Could we reconsider banning Devon permanently? Maybe a final warning and suspension? I know what he did was both wrong and not nice, but a permanent ban seems excessive for a long standing member.

Mikey maybe you weren't aware of this but Devon had 3 warnings and then he was banned for 90 days back in November. So he just got back his privileges and this is how he respects the volunteers who work on this site day and night. It is unacceptable behavior. Sorry, but the decision is final. Thanks for your input.

I have nothing but admiration for Karol and all our administrators/mods - thank you all for everything you do VOLUNTARILY - none of you deserve to be 'spoken to' in this way.

It is sad when a member has to be banned but I fully support you Sluff, there really is no choice in the circumstances, it is still very sad that it has come to this and I'm sure you're as unhappy as everyone.

Big hug for all our volunteers  :grouphug;

You to bigsky.

Disagree with his language and level of civility,  but I don't disagree with his point.

The churchill bust was a loan, and was sent back by the Bush Administration.  The DVD's may be  a minor protocol faux pas, but if anyone thinks that the British are going to withdraw from treaties or back out of long standing defense obligation out of pique over a mediocre gift to an unpopular PM, they are just silly.

This is cooked up by t he London tabloids and carried by the rightwing blogs to snipe at Obama.  They may not have more pressing matters, but we as advocates for decent medical care certainly do.

He made a point?

Bush didnt return the bust at all??
Not sure where that came from.
And i have not heard anyone say the UK was going to pull out of any theaters or warzones.  Although i think they are due to at the end of the year.  But planned long before this visit.

But Oboma did snub Gordon.  There is always a joint news conference.  A big dinner ect ect.  It is respect.

And im just curious as to who the We are you refer to when it comes to decent mediacal.  We as in IHD or we as in??

Sluff,
Thank you for replying and providing the background information. Now the ban makes perfect sense. It does not seem excessive at all based on the previous events.

The Bush Administration never sent the bust back despite the  claim.

It was on loan to the US from Britain after the 9/11 attacks and Brown said the US could continue keeping it of which obama said no to it being in the White House or in a museum as Brown suggested.

The history and relationship between Britain and the US is a very special one.

Obama failed to recognize this  and his gifts were unimaginative. A set of classic dvds that were not even coded right.

The gift from Brown clearly showed imagination and took our history and relationship in to consideration.

A pen-holder that was carved from the timbers of HMS Gannet, a Victorian anti-slave ship and something built 130 years ago and was the sister ship of the HMS Resolute which was carved to make a desk that has sat in the Oval Office in the White House since 1880.   Not to mention a framed commission for HMS Resolute and a first edition of the seven-volume biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.

Not to mention that Mrs. Obamas gifts to the Brown child were just an unimaginative.
