PD Question

After reading many posts about how and what to expect for people doing PD.
Is there any dialysis liquid that isnt made of Fructose?
And not everyone doing PD has to carry liquid during the day?  True or false.
And lastly.  I read some people do two manual exchanges others do four or more.  I assume this depends on what % of kidney function you have left?

I carry liquid during the day

I only use the cycler, I do not do any exchanges during the day

Dialysis liquid uses dextrose to control the osmosis process (not fructose). There is a kind of dialysate that contains icodextrin, which is suitable for a longer dwell (8-16 hours). I don't know what icodextrin's effect is on absorbed calories or blood sugar, if that's what you're concerned about.

Some patients, especially those who are high transporters, only use the cycler at night, and will go dry during the day. That how it's looking that I'll end up once I get on the cycler.

The number of manual exchanges you do depends on how much dialysis you need and how fast a transporter you are. Tests done after you start PD will determine whether a cycler will be better for you, or if manual is better, how many exchanges you'll need to do each day.

Those folks on Extraneal (icodextrin) carry the last dwell of the nighttime cycler exchange until the next exchange in the evening.  They do not exchange during the day. My friend who was on Extraneal said that some glucose meters read abnormally high while using it.  If you're diabetic, you may need to fight any ER people to keep them from giving you insulin and sending you into insulin shock.

I started out on 4 PD exchanges a day, 3 years later moved to 5 a day, and a year later moved to 6 a day.  Finally they virtually forced me to go on the cycler.  I've never heard of only 2 exchanges a day.  I was told that after 6 hours the body begins to reabsorb the toxins that were removed.

After my PD training, they started me on the cycler with 3 exchanges during the night and dry (empty) during the day.  It was too much dialysis for me where it lowered my blood pressure severely.  I hated the cycler because of the pain at the end of my drain. My Neph changed my dialysis to manual (CAPD) with 2 exchanges per day.  I have been doing 2 exchanges for over 1 year now.  At night I use 2.5%(green) or 1.5%(yellow) Dextrose depends on my blood pressure or weight.  In the morning I use 7.5%(purple) Icodextrin all day until my night exchange.  This treatment works best for me and so convenient.

Thx guys, and i did mean dextrose not frutrose

I eventualy hope to go on the cycler and be dry during the day.
But if i cold do two manules a day that would be fine as well.
Time will tell.
