Hi All ;

I am so happy today as I have just got back from visiting my kidney specialist as my creatine level have been going up in the last few months, and as a result I had a kidney biopsy last week.

It was found that the kidney was not in danger.  The increase creatine was due to the side effects of one of my medication. :bump;

It was so much of a relief. I feel like going down to the pub and to celebrate.

06/85 Diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes
10/04 Radical Nephrectomy (Kidney Cancer or renal cell carcinoma)
02/08 Started Hemodialysis
04/08 Started Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)
05/08 Started CCPD (my cycler: The little box of alarms)
07/09 AV Fistula and Permacath added, PD catheter removed. PD discontinued and Hemodialysis resumed
08/09 AV Fistula redone higher up on arm, first one did not work
07/11 Mass found on remaining kidney
08/11 Radical Nephrectomy, confirmed that mass was renal cell carcinoma
12/12 Whipple, mass on pancreas confirmed as renal cell carcinoma

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Admin for IHateDialysis 2008 - 2014, retired.
Jenna is our daughter, bad bladder damaged her kidneys.
Was on in-center hemodialysis 2003-2007.
7 yr transplant lost due to rejection.
She did PD Sept. 2013 - July 2017

WHY the hell didn't they adjust medications before the biopsy.  Biopsys are very dangerous to kidney transplants.  Biopsys should be a "Last Resort" test.

Oh, yeah, they get more money for biopsys.... I forgot.... how stupid of me.

I'm glad you are okay, but weeks and weeks of medications being too high aren't exactly too good for your kidney either.

Hi All

Thank you for the congratulation that I have.

The medication that cause the creatine was Trimethoprim Sulfamthoxazole, which is known in Australia as Bactrim.

The transplant unit have been giving this medication to all renal transplant patients in the area as there are a risk of Melioidosis, if it caught by any person that is at high risk such as a renal transplant patient can very hard to treat and fatal. 

In most cases, as I can understand it does create the creatine level to go up, however my creatine level went up a lot more then they expected.

So it is a catch 21 situation  :banghead; :banghead;

After discussion with the renal specialist, they have strongly advised me to stay on the medication as my creatine level have stablised and it is too risky for me to stop taking it.  However at the end of the wet season, I will be able to cease having this medication until the next wet season starts again.

I'm so glad you (they) caught it in time.  I'm sure it was a very frustrating situation for you to be in.


I'm on Bactrim (antibiotic).  I think I take it for 2.5 to 3 more months (six months total post-transplant).  My Creatinine has been holding a 1.1, going as low as .9 for about one week.  I have my next labs on Monday.
