my friend has cancer
«

One of my friends at work has just been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. It has spread throughout his spinal column. His back has been hurting him for months and months. They kept telling him it was arthritis! They finally did a scan and the cancer is extensive. He never smoked a day in his life. He has had long-term exposure to the carcinogen formaldehyde which he uses to preserve samples and organisms collected from the environment. We have been using a similar procedure in my lab for three decades. In the old days, we didn't have much in the way of fume hoods or safety regulations. We all complain about OSHA, but I hope and pray that the risk has been reduced for the younger folks around here. They are telling him that with chemo he can expect to live for 6 months to a year at the most.

Such sad news. My Dad died from lung cancer and wouldn't want anyone to go through that. I agree, I hope the OSHA standards help the future generations from being exposed.

Thank you for your notes.
I realize that we all have to go someday, but I am not ready, at 54, to see my friends die. John was a big, healthy, vibrant man until this cancer started to eat away at him. It aged him a decade in a year. I know the IHD family understands how disease can suck the life out of someone. Thank you for letting me get it out.
Yesterday also had a couple of high points - the joyous news that Monrein has a date for her transplant and the 8 month anniversary of my husband's transplant.
And really, it's a good day for me every time I log in to IHD and learn that it's been a good day for someone in the IHD family.

Hey darling. Sorry to hear about your friend. One day they will find a cure for cancer but unfortunately it will have taken so many lives before they do. I have lost a number of friends to it and my heart also breaks for Patrick Swayze. They are really fighting the tough battle. You light up everyone's life here and now you have alerted me to monrein's good news I am going to go look at that thread. xx
