coming from someone who is not the best speller in the world, nor the best at grammar -

If we are going to insist that posters use "spell check" before posting, let's please ask everyone to at least attempt punctuation!  I'm not talking about commas and colons.  I'm talking about simple periods and questionmarks!  It's very difficult to read posts that are just one long sentence.   Don't you think Epoman would agree?

kellyt, As moderator we will never correct someone's post by spell checking for them. We will fix the subject line, but that's all. We don't insist but do ask to do it as a courtesy to other poster's. There are going to be people on the site that do the best they can and we are happy they are posting. I think Epoman would agree with that. We ask your patience on this matter.

if I offend you - please do not read my posts -
I am a literature teacher and still use - instead of punctuation
so go figure
I do not care if someone does not use spell check   --- I've taught school for years and can read anything
and I do not want to hurt someone's feelings -- like maybe they did use spell check and they still missed it -

No worries Kelly - I know it can be frustrating to read!

I sometimes write to members to remind them of the spell check and punctuation - as Epoman would say, "Take pride in your posts!"

However there are a few members who have difficulty:

One member's computer will not load the spell check and they don't know how to find another online.
Two other members have severe vision problems and are doing the best they can.
Another member struggles with dyslexia and often is unsure about words even using spell check.

It makes me realize that it's not always as simple a task for some as for others. I am glad these members keep posting.

I think 99% of the posts look good and I hope members keep participating, even if it doesn't always come out perfect.

Let's not forget those of us who live under a slightly different spelling system/version of english where it is a correct spelling to use "u" in words, like "colour" !!!!

I am like everyone else, I think some do, do the best they can.  I hope they continue posting because even though they might not be able to punctuate well, spell well, they still have the same issues and feelings we all do about............kidney disease...............

I agree it is hard to read some posts when there isn't a start or stop to sentences.  I don't think Kelly was refering to spelling, just simple punctuation.    You don't need your hand slapped.  You were just asking a question.        Thanks for caring about IHD so much.       (Were you talking about me?    )

Something I noticed myself doing is not capitalizing the first word of my post. We all are guilty to a degree, but should absolutely attempt to do the best we can.

My checker tolled me sew.

A checker is a blessing.
It freeze yew lodes of thyme.
It helps me right awl stiles two reed,
And aides me when aye rime.

Each frays comes posed up on my screen
Eye trussed too bee a joule.
The checker pours o'er every word
To cheque sum spelling rule.

Bee fore wee rote with checkers
Hour spelling was inn deck line,
Butt now when wee dew have a laps,
Wee are not maid too wine.

And now bee cause my spelling
Is checked with such grate flare,
There are know faults in awl this peace,
Of nun eye am a wear.

To rite with care is quite a feet
Of witch won should be proud,
And wee mussed dew the best wee can,
Sew flaws are knot aloud.

and sluff, as for capitalization, i refuse!   i've never at any time in my life told anyone i could spell! when i was a child and would ask my mother how to spell something she would tell me "look it up in the dictionary" i hated that. if i could spell it i could find it! i've never really learned to spell well, but i do know what words mean. the dictionary has some very interesting things.....

...and then there's the one about the Christmas letter that was sent after running spell check on it.  It read "The kitchen and cupboards can now get some fresh air as stuff was scaled down, the panty was cleaned out..."

And not everyone noticed it, but hey, nothing wrong with a little holiday chuckle over an easy-to-make mistake, right?  After all, we're all human!

When in my early 20's I did some clerical work for local city government,  it was my first exposure to "spell check" and i though it was a wonderful thing.  Until the 16 pages document I had produced so proudly was proofed by the Clerk and all the 'public's had been changed to pubic.  YIKES!!!

I think we are lucky we just don't have any kids on this site who use their own special text language!  A typical text message from my stepson would be something along the lines of cu2@94abop  No2dnrwe8alredytnks. Definition - See you two at nine for a bop (dancing).  No to dinner, we ate already thanks. 

Laziness is unacceptable but we always need to make allowances to those who have genuine issues.  For example, English may be a second language, a member might have dyslexia, toxins in the blood might be playing tricks etc.  As a journalist I have had news stories picked up by media stables around the world particularly when the Olympics were on here in Sydney.  One of my pieces went into the New York Post but by the time one of the sub-editors got hold of it there, I hardly recognised it. 

There are substantial grammatical differences in every English speaking country around the world but I have to agree with Kelly, periods - or fullstops as we call them - question marks and exclamation marks are universal.   Personally, I am quite fond of the "other" symbols my keyboard allows. Occasionally you just have to say.... What the f#%k!
