Hi.  My name is Bill.  I'm brand new here -- and fairly new to hemodialysis (about 4 months).

My kidneys have failed because of a congenital disorder called Alport Syndrome.  The rest of me is pretty healthy and I'm 56, so I guess I'm lucky.  My older brother had the same condition, but his kidneys didn't fail until he was 62.  Then, he got a very successful transplant from his oldest daughter.  He's now 9 years post transplant and doing great!  My 26 year old daughter is not healthy enough to donate to me, and neither are the other 4 people who tried, so I guess I'm stuck here for a while.  I've been on the transplant list for more than a year, but my center tells me it's a 7 year wait out here so I'll have to be a patient patient.

I work as a Mental Health Court judge here in LA County.  I love the work and I finish early enough to be able to get home, feed my doggie, Maggie, and head on out for a night on the town ... or, more often, in the chair.  Maggie looks a lot like the picture I chose -- a golden retriever, and my best buddy.  Maybe I'll download a picture of me instead after a while.  Seems more appropriate.

I did have a love relationship -- or so I thought -- when I began dialysis.  But the growing closeness of our 8 month relationship -- and the onset of dialysis in particular -- scared Melanie to death.   She freaked out, so to speak.   Even though I was more caretaker of her than visa-versa, the perceived responsibility of being with a dialysis patient frightened her.  She focused on the dialysis as an issue but, ultimately, I think it was commitment she feared.  So ... who needs someone who doesn't want you in hard times; right?  I miss her nonetheless.  But I've moved on.  Sort of.

Well, I guess that's enough blather for now.  I've introduced myself, so I'll stop now.

Best regards to all of you.  Bill
