What's dialysis?

« on: August 27, 2006, 01:47:58 PM »

Hi guys,

I was driving home from work this evening when I felt a strange sensation in my fistula arm.  It felt like the vein (in my bicep) moved and I got a tingling sensation in my thumb and index finger.  The vein in my bicep went quite hard and you can see it under the surface of my arm.  The fistula itself is still buzzing away but the vein still feels a bit harder than usual.  I nearly turned round and went to A&E (ER) as my unit is shut on Sundays but as I`m not in pain I thought I should wait until tomorrow when I am at the unit for dialysis and see what they say.  Anyone had a similar experience?  My fistual is only 2 weeks old so is not fully developed or in use yet.

Never had any strange things happen in my fistula area, but I would get it checked out straight away for piece of mind. One thing you have to remember about fistula's they are our lifeline to dialysis.
Gotta make sure they work.

Hi Black,

yes, I got it checked out at the unit yesterday and they said it is fine.  Apparently it is quite common for the vein to move the way it did and it is developing very nicely.  Everyone says it is a very good fistula.  Being a newbie, I don`t know.  But if the professionals are happy then I`m happy!

Awesome glad to hear it. I am always worried about my 13 year old fistula.  :'(

Well I felt better today, I just really need to stop worrying about things until they happen. But when I start feeling sick all these thoughts go through my head and I start thinking of all the possibilities and I make myself more sick.  :(

Mattyboy, I am new with fistulas too but I get the impression that as it grows it gets bigger and sometimes harder depending on its development. There is a guy in my unit who has a HUGE one (my mom just got a pic of it today because she had her camera since I asked her to take my pic with my fistula being used today) and the guy told me today how it grew large fast. I didn't get to ask him too much because I think he was annoyed at my prying  :-[

I've been worried lately because ever since the Fistulogram I had that fixed the narrowing in mine, I don't have hardly any buzzing :(

My fistula is buzzin all the way from my elbow joint where it starts and all the way up the vein in my bicep.  Apparently it is a really good one and the nurses get excited when they touch it. LUCKY ME!!!

i had my fistula put in new years eve 2004 and they let me out of hospital that day because i'd been in hospital 2 weeks already nd i really wanted to see my friends for new years, anyway i was sat on a couch and my mate jumped next to me and landed on the scar, bursting it straight back open. the amount of blood was unbelievble. they fixed me back up but it left a scar 3 times bigger than it should be.
