DEAR AMY: I'm writing regarding "Grateful Mom," who wanted to thank the person who donated stem cells to her son.
In 2002, I donated a kidney to a friend. Not a close friend, but someone I'd known for 20 years.
Two days before our surgeries, he and his wife presented me with a shopping bag full of letters and cards addressed to me, from their family, friends and colleagues. The admiration and thanks overflowed. I read (and kept) every single one.
To me, giving up a spare kidney was not a big deal. But those letters, calling me a lifesaver, were emotionally overwhelming. To all those people, it was the biggest deal in the world. Register to be an organ donor!
