CLINTON — A Knox County man who pleaded guilty Friday to his 13th drunken driving offense will serve four years behind bars, but he’ll lose a kidney first.

James D. Lawrence will start his prison term in January after he recovers from an operation to donate a kidney to his seriously ill daughter, prosecutor Sandra Donaghy said.

Lawrence, 46, also pleaded guilty in Anderson County Criminal Court to two counts of driving while a convicted habitual motor vehicle offender.

Lawrence was nabbed on the latest DUI charge by a Clinton police officer after he was spotted swerving on roads in downtown Clinton in January 2007. Lawrence has 10 prior DUI convictions in Knoxville and one each in Sevier and Union counties, Donaghy said.

His prison sentence will be trimmed by 102 days he’s already served in Anderson County Jail, according to court records.

More details as they develop online and in Monday’s News Sentinel.
