Eagles Club raises nearly $10,000 for dialysis
Monday, October 27, 2008
By Magdalene Biesanz

Do hot dogs, hamburgers and pancakes add up?

They did for the Le Mars Eagles Club, which raised nearly $10,000 for the Le Mars Area Dialysis Services (LADS).

LADS is a local project involving the creation of a $1 million dialysis center in Le Mars.

So far, more than $600,000 has been raised for the center through donations and local projects.

The Le Mars Eagle's Club has been a strong supporter of the dialysis center.

"We thought it was kind of a community project so we decided to work on it," said Wilbur Petersen, Eagles Club president.

First, they held a hamburger and hotdog feed in August. Norbert Gotto, an Eagle's Club member and dialysis patient, and his family played a big role in the event.

"The Gotto family supplied all the hamburgers and hotdogs," Petersen said.

The grand total raised that night: nearly $8,000.

But the Eagles didn't stop there. At a pancake breakfast in September, they raised another $1,549.

Petersen recently presented a check to Jim George, a member of the LADS board for $9,349.

LADS organizers are seeking a total of $1.2 million. The first $1 million will pay for the renovations of the building, a former research and development office for Wells' Dairy. The remaining $200,000 will pay for start up operational costs.
