I took my 12 year-old Greyhound to the vet today for a much needed teeth cleaning (I skipped the last year because he came out of the anesthesia so slow last time it really scared me).  They pulled 17 teeth!!!!  I'm such a bad Mom!!!!

Greyhounds are notorious for bad oral hygiene due to the very poor racing diet (high in protein).  Plus, they are not given a proper puppy diet either.  Because of this they are prone to oral disease.

He's doing good, although he hasn't fully come out of his anesthesia "fog".  His back legs are still weak and while he stands at his water dish he slowly (and I believe unwillingly) starts to sit.  His back legs just won't hold him up when he's standing still.  It's sad and funny at the same time.  Plus, he won't just lay down.  He keeps getting up to go get a drink, which I have to limit due to the anesthesia.  I brought his water bowl over to his bed so he wouldn't have to get up, but I think in his "fog" his brain keeps telling him to go to the kitchen for a drink.

My poor baby!!!!!  I can't wait until tomorrow when he's fully out of his "fog".    :(

Kelly, please give the boy a big  :grouphug; from me. Yorkies are also prone to teeth problems and I try to brush their teeth every couple of days but with everything else that goes on around here I sometimes fail at keeping up with it. I hope he is doing better today.  :cuddle;

Thanks everyone.  Apparently, they have a lot of teeth and the 17 were not all taken from the same area.  The vet wants him to be on all crunchy food from now on.  Well, after a few days when his mouth has recovered.  The soft food is part of the problem.  It doesn't aid in knocking of plaque and such.  The crunchy helps clean the teeth a little.  But Greyhounds don't really chew.  They break and swallow.  They do everything fast!   I buy him the Greenies, but he gets no benefit at all.  Just breaks them into smaller pieces and swallows them.  It's frustrating.

He will be having can food for the next few days and then go to crunchy.  I gave him a small crunchy bone treat this morning and although it took him some time he figured out which teeth to use to break it up, he finally did.  Maybe he'll start chewing better now.

We'll be going in every 6 months now for cleaning so it won't be so hard on him.   That's him lying on the couch with Pup and Dad.   (this picture was taken earlier in the year)

It sure does look like my baby!  Frost's face used to be darker, but now he's almost all gray.
