Artifical kidneys???????????

i was looking around the web and i came across the Dialysis museum on some website.

Wow there are some scary old machines back then.
But also there were many artifical kidneys i noticed.

Are these still an option?
Did they never work or catch on??

Some people call the dialyzer (the filter) on hemo the artificial kidney.

Several months ago I read an article about an artificial kidney to be worn outside the body, similar to the pump that some diabetics wear.  I wouldn't mind wearing something like that if it meant being free from dialysis.  I believe, though, that it was something like "10 years away for human testing."

Yes, the dialyzer is what is referred to as an "artificial kidney".  As to one you wear 24 hours a day they are still working on that.

My cousin's wife over in Seattle started work at age 21 with the Northwest Kidney Center in 1971.  She worked directly with Dr. Schribner and Dr. Tinkoff.  Both these men were instrumental in the molding of dialysis.
