Word From the Board Chair
As a physician, I treat children every day who have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney failure. I have personally witnessed the impact of this disease on their lives and their families and I am convinced more than ever that the National Kidney Foundation is uniquely positioned to do something about the public health crisis that chronic kidney disease represents.
As your new Board Chair, I'm excited to be in a leadership position with the NKFNC as we unveil our new plans to reduce the burden of CKD in NC. An integral part of our plan is the Kidneyville Cruiser, a mobile education and screening unit to make its debut soon. This 48' mobile unit will travel the state touching people in all 100 counties of North Carolina offering education and screening for CKD.
As a friend of the National Kidney Foundation of NC, you will receive an email communication from us every other month, giving you the latest information about our CKD efforts and how you can help. Camp Wiwanawi 2008
The National Kidney Foundation of NC (NKFNC) hosted its 8th annual Camp Wiwanawi camp for kids at Bonclarken in Flat Rock, NC. Over 50 children attended who were referred by their pediatric nephrologists and they came from all over the state of North Carolina.
Campers enjoyed "International Week" at camp. Each day they celebrated a different culture. Throughout the days at camp the children participated in a variety of activities such as, swimming, boating, a climbing wall, ropes course and a camp wide scavenger hunt. At night the whole camp joined together for a group evening activity. They had a pizza party, movie night, bonfire, dance, and a luau.
The NKFNC is committed to providing an opportunity for children affected by kidney disease to experience a camp that is both medically sound and memorable, while instilling passion, pride and knowledge though education, participation and dedication of all involved.

In September 2006, the North Carolina General Assembly asked the North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NCIOM) to convene a Task Force to study chronic kidney disease. Specifically, the Task Force was asked to develop a comprehensive plan designed to reduce the occurrence of CKD by controlling risk factors, educating the public and health care professionals, make recommendations on a cost effective plan to reduce the burden of CKD and identify barriers to adoption of these recommendations.
NKFNC CEO Leanne Skipper served as Co-Chair of this Task Force along with Marcus Plescia, MD, MPH, chief of the Chronic Disease and Injury Section, NC Division of Public Health. The Task Force had 33 additional members including policy makers, legislators, physicians and persons with CKD.
In total, the Task Force made 15 recommendations, 6 of which were considered high priority. The NKFNC plans to make these recommendations its blueprint for program services for the next several years. To review the Task Force's work and the recommendations, visit

License Plate Image EditedFriends and supporters of the NKFNC will soon be able to publicize their support with a new kidney license plate. Funds raised from the specialized plate will support the Saving Lives Today campaign aimed at bringing comprehensive Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) education and prevention programs to all 100 counties in North Carolina.
