SHELBY - Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association will soon be receiving client applications for its annual Holiday Assistance Program, which serves hundreds with kidney disease, including transplant recipients and dialysis patients.

More participants and sponsors are needed, spokeswoman Reneé Ledford said.

"We hope many will agree to participate in this project again this year," Ledford said.

Brochures with complete details about the HAP program may be picked up at CRKA or mailed on request.

"We have also decided to change our gift-giving strategy this year and make patient treat bags to be distributed at some of the clinics to those are unable to attend the CRKA annual party," she said.

To fill the treat bags, clubs, classes, church groups and individuals are being asked to donate the following items:
- Toothbrushes
- Tooth paste
- Mouthwash
- Antibacterial cleanser
- Moisturizing lotion or oil
- Baby powder or bath powder
- Combs and brushes
- Shampoo and conditioner
- White athletic socks (for diabetics)
- Hard candy
- Sugar-free candy
- Bubble gum, chewing gum, Freedent gum and/or sugar-free gum
- Cough drops or sugar-free cough drops
- Tylenol
- Women's hygiene products
- Deodorant or anti-perspirant
- Shaving supplies
- Denture cleaning solution
- Eyeglass cleaners
- Magnifying glasses or sunglasses
- Nail kits
- Antibacterial Band-Aids (for access sites)
- Paper towels
- Kleenex
-Toilet paper
- Large print pocket calendars  for 2009
- Large handle keychains
- Small flashlights with batteries
- Peanut butter cracker packs
- Snack cookies

Sponsors may participate in a variety of ways:
1. Buy gifts from a suggestion list for a specific patient and/or spouse or child or parent within same household.
2. Buy general gifts and CRKA committee will distribute to needy clients.
3. Make a donation to a specific patient trust to use for medicines, groceries, etc.
4. Donate groceries to the patient pantry.
