I told him we didn't have to worry about strangers as much, everybody looked out for each other. He thought for a bit and then said he wished it was like that now.
That's one change that really makes me sad. When I was a kid we ran wild everywhere without fear. Of course it's still like that where I'm living now -- it's a tiny island and kids don't have to worry about strangers because they know absolutely everyone. Last year a cougar swam over and for a few weeks the kids here got to experience life as city kids live it -- escorted by adults everywhere.
Which reminds me: remember when a cougar was a wild animal?
