5 QUESTIONS FOR: Jason Wade of Lifehouse

Posted on Fri, Apr. 04, 2008

The lead singer for the rock band behind hits including "Hanging By a Moment" and "First Time" talked about his songwriting in advance of its Tuesday concert at Amos' Southend. 8 p.m. $17-$20. 704-377-6874; www.etix.com.

You wrote the latest single, "Broken," while visiting a friend in Nashville who is awaiting a kidney transplant. How is he doing now? He's doing OK. He's not had the kidney transplant yet. He's on a dialysis machine. It's kind of a day-to-day thing. It's tough, to be honest; it can be quite discouraging. He's shown a lot of courage.

How does he feel about the song? He loves it. Every time he hears it, he cries. ... I feel like that's my favorite song on the record. It was coming from an emotional and inspired state.

With the song "The Joke," you wrote from the point of view of someone who kills himself after being bullied. Was that difficult? It really was, actually. The song baffled me for a good month. I tried (at first) to write it as a narrative of someone telling the story. It didn't feel real until I started saying it from his perspective. It was kind of twisted in the way it's so poppy. But sometimes that's the best way to get your point across.

What made you decide to write the song "From Where You Are" for Allstate's Teen Driving Program? It felt like it was something I had to do. (When I was) 16, I had a friend who died in a car accident two months after getting his license.

Are you a good driver? I'm actually the guy in the slow lane. I'm kind of terrified of driving. Living in L.A., I stay in the same lane all the time. (After being on tour), it always takes a couple weeks to where I feel like a good driver again. It's funny -- I've had the same car for seven years, and it only has 10,000 miles on it.
