Hi,

Admin, I hope this is in the rite spot ???

Anyone currently on the List, did you receive
any word on this vaccine?  Hubby came home
with note from unit stating he needs this shot-
our primary can get it, but i did call Medicare and
was told that as of today it is NOT covered.  My
Dr's office said the cost was $200
Has anyone else been told this, and found out anything
about it, ie,  coverage by insurance or transplant hospital, etc

Would appreciate any info

Thanks,
Anne

I would contact his transplant coordinator and make sure they recommend it. The vaccine that's given to children for chicken pox (same virus) is live, and the transplant team may not want him getting live vaccines.

I received a 6 out of 6 antigen match transplant on January 9, 2008. Third transplant, first time on The List.

Here's more info about who should/should not get this vaccination. http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=4623.0
If you are on the wait-list or planning a living donor transplant, you should read this regarding immunizations for chicken pox and shingles.
Jenna got the vaccine and I think it was covered by her Medicare, but not sure as her dad took her to that appointment. (We have Blue Shield as secondary, but typically they don't cover immunizations.)

I had shingles last summer so asked my Neph if I should get this vaccine...after he read about it, he said no way...the hazards outweigh the benefits...not that I'm crazy about getting shingles again, but he had no interest in me getting that vaccine.
