As of yesterday, hospitals in Ontario will be allowed to use the organs of
heart attack victims as well as those brain dead... Currently only kidneys are
going to be used as they can tolerate more than some other organs.
So far only one hospital is doing the op. but 6 more hopefully by years end..
It's a start..  :)

Ya I have been waiting for 5 years myself and was told at a Kidney Symposium in Ottawa that the wait was up to 8 years back in 2001 ...  :'(

my blood type is O+ so I know what you mean about the long wait. Even though my first one I only had to wait 2 months. But with a 2nd transplant there are more antigens to match.. and harder to match .. so I feel I will be waiting a very long time. especially in Canada the wait is much longer than in the States.

Unfortunately, at this point it's only a very specific type of heart failure. But it will certainly improve the transplant stats somewhat.

The bad news is that the last I heard (last year) the wait in Ottawa and Toronto for a B kidney is about 12 years. The two cities share B organs because they are rare.

When I went to an ottawa kidney Symposium I was told back in 2001 that the wait for O+ was 8 years back then ... :(
