Wife's Gift Of Life To Organ Op Husband

A YOUNG mum told yesterday how she gave her husband a unique Valentine gift - one of her kidneys.

Hairdresser Suzanne Fyans, 24, was determined to go ahead with the donation after discovering she was a match for the transplant op.

Her husband Steven had been forced to give up work after suffering kidney failure 12 years ago.

The 33-year-old needed to have dialysis to clean his blood three times a week.

He had previously been given another kidney by a stranger in August 2001.

But he developed a rare form of cancer associated with the transplant and had to have it removed after six months.

Steven had been reluctant to allow Suzanne to donate a kidney but she had talked him round.

The Dundee couple, who met on Suzanne's 16th birthday, travelled two weeks ago to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for the operation.

Suzanne said: "I told Steven this was his perfect Valentine's Day present - but I want to know what he's going to get me now."

The couple have a son, Kasey, seven, and a two-year-old daughter, Gabrielle.

Suzanne explained that they had delayed the kidney swap until after Gabrielle was born.

She added: "The doctors told me I couldn't have another pregnancy after the operation, so to go away and have another baby first then come back.

"Once I had my daughter, we went and they started the ball rolling.

"After two years, they agreed I was a suitable match."

She said there was already a big difference in Steven's health, adding: "He finally has a bit of colour in his cheeks.

"Obviously, he's just had an operation so he isn't feeling 100 per cent but he is a lot better."
