I have not been on line for a long time, I have been tired and in and out of the hospital.  Right now I am on "cocktails" for a peritoneal infection.  All of a sudden my family and friends all came forward to be tested as a donor...I was shocked as I was never able to actually ask any one.   My son in law tested perfect, but my daughter has PKD also and then there is the concern of their four children and their need for a kidney in the future. So...to me he was not even a consideration. My sister did not match and it was very upsetting to her that she did not.  A woman who moved across the street from me three years ago and became my very good friend was tested and SHE was a match!  She is determinded to give me her kidney....I just could not believe it as she strongly started the testing process and the fact that she is a Doctor....she "pushed" the process quickly.
 We are both now done....all the "t's have been crossed and the I's dotted". We are ready. Scheduled for the first surgery of the day on  the 12th of Feb at HCMC in Minneapolis.
 Like I said....this is all so amazing to me, I am excited, delighted, scared and unsure of my new adventure.
First you "wait for the call"....play all the "transplant games and politics, and then all of a sudden here I am....get ready ...get set...go........
The ONE thing I hope I get back.....is my energy....I've missed it so, the lack of it has taken over my life.
This is a WHOLE new adventure, I am turning the page of my life!
I will do my best to keep in contact with you all, experienced friends make it all so much easier for the "unexperienced ones!"

Wow, Nan, how exciting for you and your family.
What a great thing your neighbor friend is doing for you!
Things have changed fast.
I will be praying that you first recover from the per. infection.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your donor on the 12th of Feb.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and a return of your energy. 
How wonderful to hear such good news.

Nan, that's absolutely wonderful news to hear!! I'm so happy for you! (As for the energy, once you recover from surgery, it's amazing how much you have!) I'm sorry it took a peritonitis infection to bring this about, but God works in mysterious ways, doesn't he?

When you consider examples such as this of the remarkable generosity of near-strangers, then it becomes all the more disturbing to reflect on examples at the other end of the spectrum, where even close relatives refuse to donate a kidney, even if the patient is about to die.  I read about one case where a dialysis patient was about to die because his collapsed veins were threatening him with impending loss of any possible dialysis access, which is a phenomenon that kills 15% of the dialysis population.  His sister was tested for donation and found to be a perfect match, but she begged the doctor to make up some excuse so she would not have to donate, and the doctor cooperated, telling the rest of the family that there were medical reasons why she could not be a donor.  Just imagine, though, what it means to murder your own brother and hide behind a lie about what you have done, just because you are afraid of going through a surgery which has a one in 3000 risk of death!

staff... that hits too close to home.  I have five step sisters and brothers and one half sister, none have gotten tested.  My half sister has the potenial to be a close match, but I had to bring it up to her, and when I finally asked she said no.  She has her reasons, ok.  She is now a single mom of two little girls.  But she lives at home with my parents and doesn't even have a job right now.  She is worried that she might need it for her kids?  She isn't even realted to my dad whom I inherited this from so why would they need it?  Whatever, I have had six friends test, so I guess I know who my real family is.
