I would like to find anyone out there who works third shift and is on home PD.  My husband just started and is not back to work yet, but I worry.  He leaves for work at 9:00 pm, he can be at home and ready for PD at aprox 7:00 am.  His 9 1/2 to 10 hrs of dialysis brings him to 4:30-5:00 pm.  This leaves him no time for doc appts, etc. (any activith during normal daylight hours).   Out of 24 hrs it leaves him a window of 4 to 4 1/2 hrs a day to live.  I want to know if anyone else has this situation and how they deal with it.   THANKS!!!

Is it absolutely necessary that he works the 3rd shift?  Can what he does be done on another shift?  It would seem like some accommodation on work hours is in order for him so that he can make work, dialysis, and medical appointments work out.  I found that working early in the day and starting dialysis in the late afternoon was good from the standpoint of being able to put everything in its proper place and being able to have some hours for sleep between dialysis and work the next day.  I was on hemo and his situation is different but I know life can be pretty much work, dialysis, and then more work..not alot of fun.  If it is possible for him to move to another schedule that would make dialysis and work easier to do together then he might want to look into it.

I was on hemo (still am) when I worked. I would be up at 4:30am drive 45 min to work then 45 min back and on M-W-F go to dialysis and finaly get home by 10pm. I did that for just over a year and finaly couldn't do it no more. Working on dialysis can be done there are a number of people on this site that do, but it is tough going...Boxman

Thats way too much Box.  We work an 8 hour day but its really 7 hours with a paid lunch.  With that and dialysis a fast 35 minute ride away it still wasn't much fun.

Long story short he worked for 32 years at his previous job.  They've been on strike for almost 1 1/2 years.  He found a new job (his current) and has been there a little over a year.  He works on a CNC Lathe and the first and second shifts are already taken by employees with more senority.  We are worried about his place of work because even though they've been pretty understanding so far, they are starting to question his health situation, his absences, etc.  I'm worried about him keeping this job, and I don't think with his age (51) and medical problems that he'll easily find another job.  Right now this third shift is all we've got.  We spoke with his doctor and she said that people can work on his type of dialysis and she wouldn't approve disability.  Thanks for all the replies, I appreciat it.

What!!!! His type of dialysis??? Does your nepth walk around banging her head against the wall. ESRD is automatically approved for disability it takes 5-6 months after you apply but it goes through. If your nepth is not aware of this I would ask her why not or get a differant one because she is nuts...Boxman

Is working third shift really the problem or is working full-time at all the real issue? If he worked a tradtional day, he'd still only have a couple of hours / day to live, wouldn't he? Just different hours. If he worked 8 - 5, he'd probably have to leave the house shortly after 7:00 and not get home until 6-ish, right? Hooked up around 9:00 or so? Not trying to be critical, just trying to identify the real source of the problem so you can solve the right problem.
