Extra exchange

I saw my doctor for clinic, he says based on my numbers I need to do five exchanges instead of 4, and to up the amount to 10,000mls.

I've done this, and on the cycler it isn't too bad, it's about 2 hours longer, so I have to watch it so that
I get on early enough at night.

My problem:  I am feeling sick, puffy, and nauseous every since I started this Monday. Is this normal?
To react this way at first to MORE fluids and extra exchanges?  I actually had to leave work at noon,
I was so nauseous.  I still haven't really eaten all day yet.

Hey Anne, uggh, what a pain in the rear! I never had to add an exchange, but had to use extra fluid for three of my four fills, I hated it! Sorry you're going through this.

There are a couple of things that could cause this. First, how's your blood pressure? If he's got you doing too much dialysis, it could be getting too low, and that could cause nausea and sick feeling. Second, is it pulling off too much extra fluid? Years ago, I thought I was coming down with the flu (but it was the middle of the summer); turns out, I was dehydrated. Apparently, dehydration can manifest as feeling nauseous/sick to your stomach/and the like. Is he having you leave more fluid in during the day, or are you dry? Sorry, we never discussed that...Anyway, that's the only thing I can think of that would cause you to feel puffy.

Hope some of this helps or someone else can help you out. I would say a phone call to the doc first thing Monday morning is in order if it doesn't improve.

 KT, my doctor likes me to have a full belly at all times. Yay. I CAN have a lesser dose, as long as I have
 10,000 total, he doesn't  care how I do it!

  I bet I am dehydrated. My dains are larger now, of course, the UF stays about the same, it's been
  running pretty high, which probably means I'm draining more than I'm putting in.

  I'll start trying to drink a lot more this weekend, see if that helps.

I carry fluid all the time also. I find I can only manage 1600mls during the day. Anymore than this and I feel nauseous and will end up vomiting.
Make sure you are drinking enough to cover your UF amount. The extra exchange maybe needed to take off more toxins and not extra fluid.

I dont really have any suggestions as i do CAPD and have done an extra exchange this way , when i have felt bloated or a fluid build up and had no  side effects. Are you are doing an extra exchange to pull off a fluid build up ? If this is the case why has the doctor not just put you on a stronger solution ? If you are doing an extra exchange to get rid of extra fluids , then the only other option is to cut back on what you drink.

It's for the toxins, that I am doing an extra exchange. He wanted me to do more, since I have
no 'activity' from my kidney any more.

Wattle, that's how I am. I do 1250 for the last one, before I get off in the morning, and it stays
in me til my pause after work.  Maybe it was just in too long that day?

Anne, if it's for the toxins that he wanted the extra exchange, then I'd bet money you're dehydrated. That's exactly what happened to me. He wanted me to do more volume overnight, but also a stronger solution, even though I was still urinating. It dehydrated me and dropped my blood pressure severely. Drink lots over the next day or so and see if that helps. If it doesn't, or even if it does, call the doc on Monday and let him know what's been going on (damn I hate when they do this stuff on Thursday and Friday!!).
