Hello All!
Have lurked around here for some time, joined now! I think this is a wonderful site. I'm a dialysis social worker for a small independent company in the midwest. I got into dialysis not knowing anything about it at all and haven't regretted it for a moment in the past 5 years- ok that is a bold faced lie, but it is a very interesting line of social work- i can admit! I wish, Wish, WISH all our patients were internet savy and could get on here to pariticpate in the great knowledge here. Looking forward to chekcing in here and there and getting some answers to the questions that no one can answer.

Social workers can be good mediators between the patient and other service providers. Welcome to the site!

Glad to have you here Your caring interest in helping your patients is commendable. A good social worker can be the difference between merely surviving dialysis and living with dialysis.

Welcome to our community! So glad you decided to join us. Our founder envisaged all the perspectives of this renal challenge coming together for the general good. So we are glad when workers in this area show interest enough to join us. And the fact that you lurked a while shows that you like what you see. So keep reading, and above all, keep posting.

Hi and I love my social worker, she is very new in the dialysis unit and I find that she is very open to hearing what we have to say. What do you find is the biggest question you are asked?? Kim

The questions I hate to answer but get the most is "How long can I live on dialysis?" What i say is "dialysis doesn't kill you. The complications from what brought you to your need for dialysis are often what cause people the most diifuclties."
I realize it is not the most honest answer because there are things like sepsis and infections, and a multitiude of things that can happen and of course people who have PKD or some other genetic thing going on don't count in that answer. I guess my gut tells me that people want to know that they aren't going to die because they have been on dialysis X amount of days, months or years. Plus that is usulaly an inital question that newbies ask. They and their famlies are often overwhelmed with their dialysis start becuase unfortuately we find that many of them didn't expect it or were in denial.
I wish you all could work with BJ and i, we are like the Bickersons. I think we both want all the patients to love us. BJ has the MWF patients and two (the furthest) outlier units. I cover THS here, a outlier MWF unit, home hemo and am contracted out to work with a PD program. We are both pretty outgoing people who like to have a lot of fun, but provide great service to our patients at the same time.
Thanks for hte greta welcome gang!

i am a 51 year old male on dialysis for 3 years now. This is my second time. My brother donated a kidney to me about 13 years ago. I found this site on another site. I had to laugh when i saw what it was called. I hope to meet people from all over to talk about dialysis.
