Concept
The explanation of karma can differ per tradition. Usually it is believed to be a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do. The results or "fruits" of actions are called karma-phala. Karma is not about retribution, vengeance, punishment or reward; karma simply deals with what is. The effects of all deeds actively create past, present and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain and joy it brings to others. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one's present life and all past and future lives as well. It is cumulative.

i like that, george. and the simple definition of karma that explains it as 'cause and effect'.

it doesn't have to be an esoteric exercise to know that we don't get away with anything.

;)

I believe every religion has it's own version of karma.  I know Jewish people have something called a mitzvah, if you do something good good things will follow.  At least that's what been told to me.  I believe in Karma in the sense that every action you do causes a reaction with the world.  I don't believe in it as a punishment like saying so and so ripped me off therefore he'll have bad karma.  What do people mean when they say "your Karma is good or bad"?  Can they see it?  Do they have a special talent to physically see my karma??  Sorry, is my Karma showing?  I have a run in my karma, I need to buy new ones?  My Karma is starting to chafe?

The three fold law comes into effect here.  What you do to others will come back to you three times.

I always thought Karma was kind of like a punishment. I never looked up the definition. I understand the definition now but want to add that I think each time someone chooses a negative or a positive action that it defines future decisions which in turn effects karma, in other words a person by which ever action they choose, to make creates their image, and others react to such image which creates the fruit of their actions by the way others react to that image.  I hope this makes some kind of sense.

I do believe life goes in a full circle.  Someone does something for me, I may not beable to help them, but I can help the next person.  Like the pay it forward train of thought.  Grammalady, your Mom was absolutely right.   So, if this is Karma, then I guess I think there is such a thing.   Did that make any sense?    I should have just said  " You are right, Grammalady"!

I live by this and it has proven true many times!  I'm teaching my 8 year old son, to "treat others as you want to be treated".  He's in that 8 year old bratty stage.  Hopefully he starts to believe it!
