Question About Workers Donating

Are there any workers here that have had a patient they thought about donating to or does anyone know of a worker that has donated to one of their patients?

Personally, i would think the workers in the dialysis field would be scared to donate due to the fact that they see what their patients go through 3x a week and they may be scared that with one kidney, their chances of being there is greater, i dunno just my

It was just a thought.... you know.  I hear how people in the field do the work they do because they enjoy helping people, so I figured there must be some stories about helping someone in the kindest way possible....donating life.  Why aren't the people closest to dialysis patients inspired to donate?   Oh well.......

uhhh.....that's sort of what I had in mind.  I just thought with all of the tecs and workers, and just people in the health care field in general, would be more apt to donating and someone would have a story, even if it was about someone else or just a thought about a patient that may have touched them in some way.  Something like......"I had a 23yr old patient that I wanted to donate to".....  ? ? ?

I am an RN in hemodialysis at FMC.  I dont know of any staff who has mentioned donating a kidney.  That is a good topic though.  One of our RNs is actually on dialysis at Davita/Gambro.  She has only been on for 1yr now and has worked in dialysis for over 10yrs at least.  Another one of our RNs was on dialysis and received a transplant.   So when they say they understand what you are going through, they truly mean it.

Yes, i am a dialysis patient who is seeing a tech at my center. Because we can't see other out of dialysis, we have had to keep it hush hush. She has been a tech for a number of years. We have kinown each other for around three years. When we started to date we had to be careful where we went. The company policy on dating said that she would be transfered to another unit. As of yesterday she has put in for a transfer to a unit closer to her home. Anyway, it wasn't too long after we started to date she said to me, "I want to donate a kidney to you". I thought that was the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. For some reason i said yes. So i took her to all of the tests that were needed. The hospital agreed to keep all the info confidential. All of the tests are done. Unfortunately she isn't a good match. I got to tell you though she blew my mind. She is the first person to even consider doing that. Although the news broke her heart we just try and carry on. It has not effected our relationship. What ever happens she will always have a special place in my heart.

There are some that have done so. 

However I do not think one should view that the staff of dialysis units should be inspired to donate more than anyone else.  In reality as much as people that go to dialysis may think they know the staff, in reality the two are complete strangers with the exception of meeting and limited actions because one is on dialysis and one works at dialysis. 

Not to mention the discourse that may occur if a staff member chose to donate to one patient over another.

I wonder if there are policies in place at most clinics that would prevent, or at least discourage this? As Keefer mentioned, he isn't supposed to be dating his tech, and then they had to keep it confidential that she was considering donating to him. Companies/clinics may be afraid of lawsuits if an employee chooses to donate to one patient and not another (as mentioned by BigSky). I do however, think I remember reading an article about a neph donating to a patient - that would be a LITTLE bit different since they're in business for themselves, for the most part.
