Rob showing off his pot of gold!

« on: July 31, 2007, 07:45:28 AM »

Don't know where to post this, Off-Topic or General Information since it's due to kidney disease.

When we first got married we didn't get life insurance.  At that time Rob only had diabetes but we thought we would have a long time to get life insurance that we pay for.  We have it through our work, but it was nothing significant.

Fast foward a few years and now we can't get it for Rob due to his diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease.  We were told that once he gets a transplant, some companies will allow him to get it, although the premium would be super high.  I have it for me, but its a normal rate and doesn't kill us each month.

However, I am scared that God forbid something happens to Rob we will only have enough for his service and a little left over.  I'm not looking to make it rich by him.  Heck, I don't want anything to happen to him!  But I would like to know that there is a safety net if something happens.  I am happy that if something happens to me, Rob will be all set.  It's just piece of mind.

Has anyone tried to get life insurance after a transplant?

Nope but thats why if at all possible patients should continue working during dialysis.

In the beginning I could see what a train wreck this whole thing could be if I let it.  I wondered if I stopped working during dialysis if I would be able to replace the job I already had which came with a paycheck, retirement savings, medical benefits, life insurance, and a whole lot of vacation.

The answer was either maybe or no so the choice was clear.

I'm happy to say that when I kick the bucket someone will get money.  They can move to Hawaii or do whatever else makes them happy.

Good luck skye dog!

I tried prior to my second transplant, and was unable to. Perhaps the laws have changed since then (this was in the late '90's that I tried), but because of what my neph told them (basically, I had had a transplant and had hypertension), no one would accept me. Admittedly, I did not try very hard, but I did try three or four more reputable companies.

Thankfully, my husband is employed by a county which offers very good benefits, and they have said that once I get my next transplant and am complication-free for a year, I will qualify for one amount, then another five years complication-free after that and I can get even more. BTW, my hypertension has since resolved itself, so that's no longer a factor.

Yes, Rob still works, mainly to keep his sanity!!  If anything happens, I will get his pension, but not until retirement age.

We tried to get some for Otto besides what he gets from work but at the time his creatine was 1.4 and they said that was to high so his Dr wrote a letter saying it was perfect for a transplant pt and they still said no.  :banghead;
