Any New Ideas For A New SW In The Field About What Would Help PTS

I am very new to Dialysis Social Work (6 months). I want to find new activities or ways to improve how the patients view me (knowing how much i want to help). I have a great relationship with the pts and want to continue to impress them by doing more to meet their needs. It has been interesting to read 'Idiotic comments" that people say to dialysis pts. I think this might be a new topic that i can discuss with the pt's to help them cope.

BJ...thanks for wanting to help. I think we all know how crazy a center can be, and that sometimes even the patients can be, ummmm. difficult to handle. But I've been blessed with 2 great social workers who have helped make my situation more tolerable and have reduced so much stress in my life. Just try to understand the complete upheaval we've all encountered by having to make dialysis part of our lives, know the stress it takes on us and our families, and realize the fear and trepidation that newbies face when they first show up. Help make the centers patient-friendly and let your good sense and compassion guide you more than corporate rules or philosopies.
The fact you are here and posting means you are already probably one of the good ones!!!!

There must be quite a few patients whose greatest need is someone to talk to. Just someone to really listen and it sounds like you are doing that. I guess that's why this site exists is just for that, someone to listen and truly understand.
