Old Newbie from Humble, TX

I do pass on my thanks for allowing me to join the forum and the FB page.  New to the forum and also relatively new to dialysis and am seeking info and friends within this area.  My fistula is still not working so I am using the tunnel catheter system that is attached to my chest.  Now in my forth month, and too much wear and tear I've got to go in Thursday of get it replaced.  The VA doctors just went in a second time to get it created and made a mess of my arm so I'm at least 60 to 90 days away from being able to use it.  I'm a soon to be 73 year old male currently living just north of the Houston City limits.  Originally from the Dallas area, but spent the majority of my adult life, 22+years, in the Air Force.  Including 8 years of active duty we spent 30 years living in Las Vegas.  We came back to Texas 4+ years ago but miss the dry heat of the desert., Spent the first three years in the Security Police including a tour of Vietnam.  This was followed by the greater part of my career working in the various areas of Military pay.  On a break in service, because I became a single parent, I did munitions assembly in a reserve unit at Carswell AFB, TX.  I finally got in enough active duty years after returning to active duty to get a retirement.  Much like some of those I've met at my dialysis center, at first I had some serious attitude problems with my failed kidneys and spent the first month and a half in the "Why me God and Oh woe is me routine".  Turning to my Faith, I got my answer that turned me around.  From my Prayers the Lord answered me more or less saying, "Boy, dialysis is my gift to you so that you may continue to live.  Yes, I get tired of the 3 and a half hour three time a week sessions, but I've taken the time to get to know my techs and enjoy the time as much as I can.

A positive attitude is a blessing if you are involved in this sport.  I have a tee shirt that sums it up “DIALYSIS;DAMNED IF YOU DO; DEAD IF YOU DON’T’

Welcome the the group. I hope your fistula gets successful setup.  And overall I hope you are able to keep your overall health strong as that helps to make dialysis easier to deal with.

For me, learning how to control my diet more responsibly as well as maintaining very strict fluid control is essential to preventing my leg cramping
 and extreme exhaustion of the treatments.

The more time I can spend out in my yard the more I sweat, the more I sweat the more I can allow myself to drink.  And I Love ice water.  I just can't have much more than a single ice cube at a time if I stay in the house.

I cramp at 3 Liters so weekends I have to stay very careful.
